Thats funny. The Tranny is what I consider the weak link in my Dodge Ram.

And it's because of that soft engagement. I know several plow operators who had theirs re-programmed after seeing other's cook their trans after a couple of weeks of plowing when the new Rams rolled out in the mid 90's.

Dodge also calls for a servicing and band adjustment every 30K. I wonder how many actually do this.

1178hp? Stock tranny? Doesn't add up to me.

That is why it gets my vote for one of the best.
If you read my post all the way through you will see that these were used only in 89 & 90 Corvettes after that GM used a much weaker gearbox.

I read the full post and that is impressive power you're making - obviously not stock! But the "newer" versions of the 6speed handle the power of the LT1 (300hp)and LT5 (375-405hp)(ZR1) engines fine. The older L98 engines of 1985-1990 are more tame at 245max hp and they used a more robust 6speed is odd. I am very knowledgable of vettes and did not know about this change in transmission strenght- I even worked at Bowling Green at one point. A powertrain engineer once told me that the breaking point of the 6spd was around 550-650hp - that's why the power your making sent me into confusion...

The breaking point is not determined so much by power but by traction. That is why I will not use a bigger tire than what I have on it now. If I use too much throttle it will just spin the tires. The breaking point of the transmission is greater than the traction coefficient of the tires.
Many times drive line componets are broken by shock loading.
They rev the engine and then drop the clutch. With the power that I have in this car and the size of tire it would not move if I dropped the clutch at high RPM but with a 406cid engine I don't need to rev it, just bring it out easy and then throttle up. This is not a drag strip car it is street driven. You may find this site to be of interest.

You make 100% sense. Better to slip a little than to grip too much. I learned this from my Buick Grand National. While it's no where near what you're putting out, I'll spin the tires a little instead of instant grip because I know I'll snap something. Good website, too. I wish I got the 6sped on my 94 instead of the auto. I had an earlier vette with the 4+3 and was tired of shifting when I got the 94. But now, miss the fun of shifting. Yeah, my old CJ7 is a manual, but with only 3 gears, there's no use

Sounds great! You've got a fast one there. My 94 has the Z07 package, which included the FX3. I also have the performace axle ratio, run flats, low tire pressure system, sport seats, basically every option, even dual tops (its a coupe). I've only got the regular bolt ons for now, but I got my eye on a Paxton...

Sorry for being Off topic everyone, but had to respond to you.

Back on topic - I guess another transmission that I have experienced that was pretty good was actually in a little 76 chevette. I friend had one when we were in highschool that he bought used for $400. This car was abused, we did hundreds of Nuetral drops and never damaged the trans far as we could tell. It must have had a safety feature because it never "banged" and only barely chirped a tire. But we were young and abusive. Was alway funny when my buddy told the girls about his "vette".

Good throw out!

My vote for [one of] the best goes to AW-4 in Jeep Cherokee's/XJ. A variant of a Lexus/Toyo transmission used by those manufac's in the mid-90's. In fact the Toyota Supra and Supra Twin Turbo utilized this tranny and nearly all was identical internally, with the exception of the torque converter (beefier). With that said, I've heard rumblings that the AW-4 in Cherokee's can handle 300-400hp in stock form and quite a few have clocked 200k and counting on the odo.

The odds of any random owner/operator/driver being "bad" (not checking fluids, using incorrect fluids, and/or failing to have required service performed at the specified interval) are exponetially greater than the odds of any random transmission being genetically defective (bad) from the manufacturer.

Just thought I'd throw that out.

Best transmission - GM Powerglide. With HD parts they stand up to insane HP levels in drag racing applications.

Worst transmission: Ford AX4N. I serviced mine religiously every 30K miles and it had a complete internal failure at 80K. A common problem for that model of tranny.

I'm not sure what the exact model of the transmission in my mom's old Taurus was, but it died a premature death too. It was a 1990 model, 3.0L V6. In late 1997 it had a complete failure with about 100,000 miles on it. I was with my dad when the transmission started shifted horribly during heavy traffic. We pulled into a parking lot and I remember seeing shavings all over the dipstick. We were able to limp the car home, but it was a pretty rough trip. Aside from the transmission failure, it was a wonderful car. Everything else about it was great. It is still on the road, but with a new transmission and new owners.

worst tranny i owned was on my 03 maxima. I Heard of a lot of trannies going on these cars but figured it wouldn't happen to me since i baby my car. Sure enough, when i had it for sale, A customer was taking it for a test drive with me in the car and the car did a nasty slip and bang into gear. She didn't know much about cars but knew that something wasn't right, i tried to play it off but she knew haha.
I found a good day that it wasn't acting up and traded it in and got a stang.

One thing I like about the AW4 in my 2000 Cherokee (XJ) Limited is the fact that it has a drain plug - making routine fluid changed easy. So far, 76k and no issues. Teamed up with the select-trac full time transfer case and I'm in heaven!

So we've already had a couple of threads detailing which oil furnaces are good, and which are not, I think there needs to be a thread talking about what transmissions are good and what are total garbage.

Automatic or Manual, don't care which really. I know automatics more so I'll say that one of the all time worst Automatics ever is the Ford AXOD(-E)/AX4S/AX4N.

One of those things that says "Ford got themselves into the bad situation they're in".

to be honest I've never really driven anything with an Automatic that I really liked, the 090 in my Vanagon was at least competent, though.

The transmission they put into the 2001 Ford Windstar at work is utter garbage. I think it's the AX4N. in 150,000 miles it's gone through three rebuilds, and it's also had a differential (that's what the tranny shop said) go bad and the transmission case actually cracked once too. What a terrible van.

I think a person buying a new car with a 5 or 6 speed or cvt auto box down the road will be in for big cost to repair.I've read cvt won't be repairable just throw out put in a new one.Would be interesting to know how that transmission is doing in the new Chryco products.

Any input on the Chrysler 45FRE? I have one in my 02' Liberty that sees almost no off road. It has Amsoil ATF in it right now.

Nahh, the 2001+ windstar AX4N isn't nearly as bad as the 1995-2000 windstar AX4S transaxles. You hear of way fewer problems with the 2001+. Any of the AX4S/N's will not last without ~30Kmi ATF changeouts and atleast 1-2 pan drops and filter changes.

Interesting. I did read of improvements to the transmission when reading up on it, but it's still given a lot of problems. In fact, it's acting funky right now! Your signature is funny, on another note. Windstar 2001 babe magnet.. you mean baby magnet!

It's all in good fun.

Best transmission I probably would nominate the A340 series transmissions found in most fine Toyota/Lexus RWD vehicles from the late eighties to the late nineties. Absolutely smooth, reliable and it puts up very well with neglected fluid changes.
