I am in the process of purchasing my first home, it has a stove but only the stove top works. The computer in it is fried and the oven is not functional. The seller is giving me a credit of $275 to put toward a new unit. A quick search shows Frigidaire and Whirlpool being on top for stove / range reliability. I just wanted to know what you all recommended. Want to keep it below $500 which is doable with the July 4th deals going on.

I'm looking at the Stainless Steel Premier Brand.... battery spark ignition, with oven window, lifetime burners. But it's 3x more than your looking for, but it will work during a power outage, no electronics.

Haven't all the appliance brands consolidated now? So you're paying for a name but getting a unit that comes out of the 1 factory that builds all of them?
If anything, go with something simple and a non-fancy brand. I swear the Hotpoint ranges that have spiral heating elements don't ever die. You could step up to ceramic cooktop for easy cleaning as that is old tech nowadays.
I'd avoid anything that's like.. Samsung + Induction + WiFi enabled + Steam Oven --- out of your price range but high chance of some obscure part breaking that costs $300 for a new one and you have to buy OEM brand new because there is 0 aftermarket.

Buy a name brand that doesn't have any electronics, if you can find one.
Wife had a stove with the control board on the fritz and her trying to sell the home it was in. I pulled the control board and sent it to a place that fixes appliance control boards and it was fixed for around $100. In a week. I think they just swapped it for a repaired one.

Six years ago I bought a new bottom of the line stove for $200. Spark ignition, no electronics. Very happy with it.

Never understood whether you are looking at gas or electric. No gas in my area, so electric it is. Over the years wife and I have owned Whirlpool, Frigidaire, and GE ranges. Of the three she's preferred the Frigidaire oven for baking. (Don't ask me?) All three have been of similar quality and durability. Anyway if it is an issue, GE appliances is now owned by Haier.

I find Sears Kenmore mid range stuff to be pretty good. Just seems to work and the odd problem is repairable by me, as parts are easy to order and someone has usually done a youtube video on the repair.
I have a Whirlpool smooth top from 2000 I bought new and it has needed a control panel replaced. I think I paid $130 for the new panel.

I would purchase one of the Whirlpool brands without question.
In talking to several repair people recently, they see fewer problems and have better parts availability with Whirlpool.
We are still using the Whirlpool stove that I bought shortly after buying our home in 1994.

Not worth fixing the oven on the stove you have now? If its under 8-9 years old, you can probably buy a new board for 2-300$. Might be better option than buying something new.

Yep, I assume that Sears has some sort of system and people whose job it is to pick winners at certain price points. Anyways, it seems I've ended up with alot of stuff from them that takes some abuse and keeps going.

Hey guys, we ended up purchasing 4 new appliances! We are in the process of purchasing our first home and the oven was dead so we did some looking around and found that Home Depot has the best deals going on with their July 4th sale. We ended up picking out a Whirlpool 6.4 cubic foot convection oven for $300 off the original price! We also ended up purchasing a new side by side Whirlpool fridge / freezer, and new matching Whirlpool Cabrio washer and dryer. All had some pretty heavy discounts except for the fridge which was only 10% off, but it was the only Whirlpool side by side that would fit in the existing spot in the home. Hopefully we will end up making money back with energy savings. The current fridge, washer and dryer in the home must be at least 20 - 30 years old. The oven was only about 10 years old, but again was fried. The inspector thought it was due to a lighting strike.
