I read today they may come out with Heat II.....It would be hard to match the first......

Isn't the problem really that automatic fire is rarely used or even advised? I know it looks cool, but won't an M16/M4 with a 32-round magazine be out after about 3 seconds of automatic fire? And the weird thing is all these police procedurals (I'm looking at you NCIS) where they seem to get into shootouts with automatic weapon toting baddies every week when that's exceedingly rare.
However, most police have real automatic weapons now - especially SWAT. I understand that it's rarely used though.
As for the best and most realistic, maybe another Michael Mann movie - Collateral with Tom Cruise. None of this BS where someone seems to have almost unlimited ammo unless there's some plot point where reloading adds to the drama. I heard that he practiced the Mozambique Drill with live ammo in preparation for the scene. He actually has to stop and reload after expending his magazine, although they might have fudged it with maybe one more shot. I counted 14 shots from a full-sized HK USP .45 when it should be 13, but what's one here or there?
And while the overall movie may not have been that great, the 2006 version of Miami Vice had some really effective shootout scenes where the chaos is pretty apparent. And nobody is just spraying and praying like in a lot of movies.

One of my favorite movies, but a lot of it was just ridiculously unrealistic, including an accountant with a badge somehow managing to blow away everyone with a shotgun when they're obviously more skilled than him. In a real shootout he probably would have been one of the first to die.

What about Commando. I think Arnold killed like 400 guys and dodged like 9000 bullets.

Controlled full auto, as shown in the film, when done expertly, is extremely effective even if just suppressing the opponent, while moving to/from an objective. Yes, you can deplete an entire 30 round magazine in about 2 seconds. However, that's wasteful and ineffective. If you watch, especially Val Kilmer, he pops of short controlled bursts of a few rounds in various directions. When done this way, you'll get, say 10 short well aimed bursts per magazine. Very effective.
I saw an interview with US Marine Corps shooting instructors that they use the Heat bank heist escape to demonstrate proper move, shoot, communicate, reload tactics for laying down suppressive fire, short bursts to conserve ammunition, fast reloads, firing in multiple directions in a 360* threat, etc.
Obviously highly stylized but I do love the John Wick movies. He always makes sure they're dead and reloads frequently 
As an Arnold fan, generally, (He's in 3 of my favorite films; Terminator, Conan, Predator), I tried watching Commando a few years ago. It is unwatchable bad.
May as well watch Saturday morning cartoons.
Apparently anything passes for entertainment at your house! Just gunfire, loud noises, and explosions, sans any acting, plot, character development, audience investment, etc.

I had an acquaintance in HS who joined the Marine Corps Reserves. He said his standard issue rifle was an M16A2 with only a 3-shot burst as an automatic feature. He said they basically had it to enforce that they don’t just spray and pray.
My sister in law is in the Canadian Air Force. Standard issue rifle is a C7 which has no burst, only full auto. From what I understand it’s basically an M16 with full auto and a different barrel. They practice shooting a lot but her base is small and not much else to do

The final gunfight in The Magnificent Seven is epic and well choreographed, Steve McQueen at his best, he and Eastwood both use Andy Anderson holster rigs. Open Range is very gritty, fast paced and realistic. The final sequence in Pale Rider is also well done, Eastwood rocks, but John Wick is the MAN. Still gotta give realism points to Heat.

They just had to be different. I’ve seen one before on a Royal Canadian Navy guest ship at San Francisco Fleet Week.
I was thinking of that movie before I even finished reading the title! And, YES I agree! If you have DD or DTS surround, the battle is crazy! Heat is the first movie I ever bought on disc. Saw it in theater, too.

I didn't really like Heat. I may be one of the only ones that didn't.
This, as to thread and IMHO, at least the Theatrical version since the Extended is totally different and worse.. is an amazing work.
Heat was OK but struck me as contrived and predictable.
Would have posted a clip from but.. F-bombs, language.
