Best 2 stroke oil for small old outboards premix

I have a couple of old Evinrude outboards. One is a 1956 7.5HP and the other is a 1974 15HP.

They don't get used many hours every year, and I've always mixed the 1956 to 16:1 (ratio stated for those pre-needle bearing years) it only has bushings and no needle bearings. Just bought the 1974 and will be mixing 50:1.

Is regular 2 stroke oil better or a TCW-3? I've read some conflicting information here on BITOG.

Walmart has a brand in a gallon jug (silver colored) specifically designed for outboard 2 stroke motors fairly cheap. With the motors you mentioned being so old I don't think you'd need anything exotic.

Definitely use TCW3. Outboards can run colder due to water cooling and TCW3 is designed to foul less in a cold engine. The additive pack in TCW3 oil is also less harmful to the aquatic environment.

I've used that stuff for over a decade in everything I have and everything still runs strong. Though I run a touch richer mix.

Run TCW3, it is soooo much better than anything either of those motors were speced for. Both of them were speced for 30W motor oil when new so any TCW3 will work. I would use the ratio that was specified for them at time of manufacture.

This is some good stuff, do not run it at 100 to 1, stick with your 50 to 1 Ratio.

40:1 mix with modern oils will work just fine in the old heavy oil mix spec'ed motors that spec'd 16 or 20 to 1. Had a '75 500cc free air-cooled sled that spec'd 20-1. Ran it 40-1. Oil is way better today than back then, that's why the original specs used so much oil, most of it was not much better than straight non detergent 30w.
I would not push it to 50-1. I know someone with a 2 stroke Saab car, he runs 40-1 synth. in it. Original spec for it was 32-1. 1 qt. of 30w non detergent motor oil to 8 gallons of gas. Used to fuel up a customer at the Esso station in 1972 with one also.

Tcw-3. Quicksilver. Buy a quart at Bass Pro shops or Academy. $5-10 bucks.

I disagree. Older outboards have bushings where modern ones have roller bearings. Replacing those bushings with bearings is the main reason modern 2 cycles can run on less oil... and less that modern oil has better lubricity.

It's funny, I've always run the old '56 on 16:1. And I've yet to have a plug foul, crazy..... The gas lasts at least 4 years in the metal tank with that much oil in it too. I'd bet longer than 4 year actually

Gasoline more than a year old goes stale. Maybe use it up in an old lawnmower, or don’t premix more than a year’s worth.
For the 56, I’d use Chevron Supreme SAE 40 or 30 at 20:1 and 24:1 for 60s engines.
