Belt Tightness On Lawnmower

Are the belts for a self propelled Lawnmower suppose to be loose ? I'm wondering if I ought to buy a new belt since I have my mower apart.

That's the drive belt. It will be slack until you pull the drive handle. That takes the slack out and makes the mower go.

So then you dont need to replace it until it comes off ?

If the belt is in good shape and the go handle takes the slack out and makes the mower go, you should be good.

When it gets to the point that one side (pulling side) is tighter than the other would be a good time to get a new one to have on hand cause it won't be long.

It's tensioned only with a spring. They won't be that tight. If it doesn't slip, it's good.
