Use Shell Rotella synthetic 5-40. Good cold starts and higher vis that your looking for. Can be bought at most wal-marts or auto parts store. Wal-mart = less cost.

Most hot rodders run this for a reason.

Wife has a Toyota Avalon that blows smoke at an idle. I have been using 20w50 the last two years. The year before that I was using 15w40, but it was using about 1 quart in 1000 miles. With the 20w50 I get about 3000 miles and use under a quart.

I had a Dodge truck that did the same thing and I changed the valve seals. It was a pretty easy job for that engine, but the V6 engine in the Avalon wasn't going to be an easy job. Those seals are down deep in the head not to mention one head is up against the fire wall. The car is a 1996 model so I can't see it much more longer than a year or two at the most.

Get something with a '5' as a first number, for best winter starting. But even a '10' first number is much better than that 20-50.
The second number can be 40.
You are going to burn/blow oil anyway, so might as well have her start easily and get a little more pep and gas mileage.

Rotella T 5W40 from Walmart inthe 4 quart jug! Maybe Mobil 1 0W40 if it does not burn any oil or use any.

I like the not well regarded here (but liked by the guys that actually use it) 10w30 Quakerstate Higher mileage engine in the red bottle. Never had an old motor run smoother than on this oil; and it might well help soften your stem seals a bit. But I'm not allowed to do stem seal research ...

Well it has not API rating so it has either a lot of good stuff, or not enough stuff. I have actually wanted to do a VOA on this stuff but I dont have the cash for it now.

You should not have bad valve seals in a model year 4.6 1996 or newer. Ford switched to viton valve seals in 1996 and the valve seal problem vanished. Look for other causes if it is 96 or newer.

I heard kinda same thing, but wat I heard 98 or under have worse valve seal, 99 + up where they improve the valve seal.

Yeah, that's some Old School! You can find 5w50 over the counter or even a 0w50 if you order Eneos online.

But yeah, no reason to run a 50 instead of a 40 unless you car specs higher than the usual 5w30
