Must have been some interesting statement by the officer. With a 300 lb moped + rider combined weight, 40 hp at the rear wheel, 1 g worth of traction would have him going 50 mph in under 90 feet from a standing start.

Five miles over is not worth fighting over. This is revenue enhancement, pure and simple. Cops must "earn" their keep. Call the number on the ticket and try to work a deal. Agree to pay a modest fine if they will drop the points on your license. Even if they don't, 2 or 3 points on your license is not going to change the course of history. If you have had the same insurance company for over 3 years, they won't care either, except maybe in Massachusetts, in which case I would go to court and fight it! The insurance "surcharge" will be much worse than the fine...Good luck!
I just changed insurance companies to progressive back in 8/04. I probably have a few points on my license because I was in a fender bender last year. I can't afford anymore. my renewal for my six month policy comes up in 2/05 about the same time as my court date.
Sounds very familiar! about 6 years ago, when I was 21, I was coming home from work at 4am in a beat up toyota corolla driving through a bad neighborhood. Well when I turned onto a side road, the posted speed limit was 35mph, a cop sitting at the other side of the intersection started to flash his brightlights in my rear. I was driving 40mph and I saw a car in my rearview mirror flashing his bright lights at my car while he was sitting at the light. I just kept driving. When the light turned green, he sped up fast on my bumper and rode my bumper for a good 1/3 of a mile. then turned his lights on. pulled me over. Another unmarked cop car came from the other direction. Pulled over too. the cop who was tailgaiting said I was going 60 in a 35. no !@#$ way, I calmly argued that I was going 40 in a 35. the other cop said "ya, I had to drive 100mph to catch up with you" they went back to the car, gave me a ticket for a 40 in a 35. they left. this was back in 1999. they probably thought I was someone else behind the wheel and gave me a ticket for my time.
In PA, police cannot take a speed reading within ~500 ft of a posted speed sign that reduces the limit.

Update! I got my ticket dismissed. I read a book "beat your ticket, go to court and win!", took pictures, wore my nicest tie I could find. I was in line with almost 300 people. When I got to the clerk, she saw the ticket for "35 in a 30" and asked "your not going to speed again are you?" I said "no" she wrote dismissed and I was gone. only cost me $3 parking! no court costs. the guy behind me told me he got a ticket on the same day for going 35 in a 30. he told me it was 12/30 when I got my ticket. end of year ticket quotas hello!! but thanks to everyone for their advice. on the local news last night, the police chief in forrest city, arkansas which is 40 miles away from Memphis, TN issued a memo stating officers should average "1-2 traffic citations/per day" so beware when driving I-40 through there.
