More on the eye safety..

Went to the dirt track with my wife Saturday night. I wear glasses, she used to wear safety glasses there, but did not this time. During the evening I got hit in the chest with a high momentum rock or clod. If that had hit my wife in the eye, it would have been bad news indeed. We need to rethink our protection strategy!

My bench grinder came equipped (unfortunately) with the ubiquitous cheap chinese wire wheel. Of course I keep the little plastic shield in place and wear safety glasses, but the first time I used it to buff some rusty bolts it shedded one piece of wire that struck dead center in the tip of my nose and went about 1/2 inch deep. That was some surprisingly sharp pain! I plucked it out and everything was okay, but I shudder to think if that had gotten to my eye. I bled like a stuck pig for a while. Now I buy only the best wire wheels I can find, and they seem to shed a lot less. I'm thinking that some sort of clear, full face, flip up shield might be a good idea.
