I just purchased a bat house (Nature's Way CWH6) and was wondering how many of you have them. I'm wondering how successful you've been getting bats to inhabit the house and any tips you may have
Right after I moved to New England, the son of a friend was making bat houses for an Eagle Scout project and I bought some.
They didn't come with instructions and I nailed them up on trees in darker areas in our woods where I figured bats would like to hide.
Told my friend a couple years later that no bats had appeared to move in and he asked me about where I had nailed the houses up...he told me then that I had made a big mistake, the #1 consideration was that the houses needed to get sun as the bats wanted to live in warm houses.
Never bothered to move any of them...I think most of them are still hanging up over 20 years later.
We live on about 40-50 acres of wetlands/woods and I have four bat houses in trees near the edge by our house. We've had bats in them at least several times, I'm not climbing up to check but I've seen them fly into the boxes on occasion. I love to have them around I wish we had more. There are quite a few bats in the neighborhood as you can see them flying around in the evening.
