Lets bat at Valvoline All Climate again. The one with such poor reviews here on this forum.
Yet, people say within a 3k OCI, this stuff is perfectly fine. Is it safe to use this stuff for 3k even if it is in the crank case for 4-5 months? It takes me this long just to get 3k on one of my vehicles.
Also, does anyone know if Valvoline All Climate is group I or II basestock?

It will be fine for 3k or 5 months. Even in a cab! The oil looks weak on paper but most of the UOA look really good.

Valvoline AC 20w50 was my oil of choice in my 1989 VW Jetta. I sold it with 225,000 miles on it and it did not burn or leak 1 drop of oil, ever. For the last 75,000 or so miles i owned it, i also used Napa 20w50 oil which was mfg by Ashland (valvoline) quite a bit of the time as well. This with weekly, if not daily, trips to the red-line in the car when entering the hwy. Then again, the car never saw more than 3,000 miles between oil changes. Usually more like 2,000 mile OCI.

Another shoot-from-the-hip assertion by someone who habitually posts before he grasps the thread-starter question first.

We are talking pure dinos here Ray (All-Climate).... not syn-blends. Many folks here feel group III are synthetics. Otherwise the correct comparison would be Durablend vs oils like Trop Artic.

Sorry for the words-replay that originated on another topic by you. What goes around - comes around bud!

Lets all keep the conversations friendly. We are starting a new year and all are on an equal plane. But this year, no member bashing. Any and all will result in

I spent the last 4 days trying to calm down some 4 way member bashing. It is over as far as spending Holidays trying to keep peace, so please lets all keep posting on oil and leave the cutesy/member slamming out.

grbr,

I have used Valvoline for 5 years in three vehicles with absolutely no problems. It is some fine oil.

Sorry, but I wouldn't base everything on a UOA. I do respect them for what they are, but I'm not gonna worry that some oil is doing better than the other.

Per the Valvoline Website 5W-30 MSDS All Climate 5W-30 uses a minimum of Grp II basestock.

Ashland/Valvoline is now more of a blender, like Castrol, since the break-up of the Marathon-Ashland partnership.

The Marathon-Ashland refinery at Cattlesburg, Kentucky was a Grp I facility. Some of this Grp I was making its' way into the Valvoline lineup - example Durablend.

But, now for GF-4, it's very hard to mix a 5W-30, using Grp I, that meets the GF-4 performance requirements for heat resistance and engine deposits.

You can use Valvoline All-Climate with total confidence. I have for the past 28 years with no engine failures or premature wear. I have a 1995 Dodge Caravan that I bought new and have used nothing but All-Climate in it since the first oil change. The van now has 166,000 hard driven miles on it and still runs strong. My dad switched to Valvoline in the late 1960's and has been using it exclusively since then. It is good oil and will serve you well!!!

Interesting Blue99. The 5w30 AC is mostly Group II/II+/III CAS number (IIRC, that CAS number covers all that). But the 10w30, 10w40, and 20w50 AC still show Group I CAS #.

I used Valvoline All-Climate for many years in many vehicles, changed every 3000. I put over 100k on most of them with few if any problems, none oil-related. Main thing is there are some better dino oils available for less money such as Havoline and Chevron. I still use some Valvoline just because they have a packaging plant in my town. The All-Climate is adequate but Synpower, Max Life, and DuraBlend have all been shown to be pretty good stuff.

No "SM" rated oils contain Group I content other than the less than 1% used as the additive pack's carrier solvent. UOAs prove Valvoline All Climate's effectiveness. It's just overpriced when compared to better oils such as Phillips TropArtic Premium Synthetic Blend which is known to have in excess of 50% Group III content, the remaining base oil stock being Group II.

That's true..but thing is, Valvoline All Cimate is OFTEN on sale at Advance and AZ.. All the time. The cases will go on sale for 23.00/case, which is pretty good. It takes me 4-5 months to get 3000 miles on one of my vehicles.. The only conern I have is that it sees a lot of short trips and I worry about oil longevity as a result no matter the brand. Especiall in the winter with condensation, etc..

I agree JohnnyO....That's the main reason i'm NOT using Valvoline in my current vehicle. I like Valvoline, but when you take price into consideration, it's just not worth the extra expense with oils like Superflo, Havoline, even semi-synthetic Motorcraft all at less cost.
