Everyone buy into this one? I have a conclusion, if this is correct.
Group 6 oils are Polyinternalolefins (PIO).
There's a very interesting article in the November 2003 issue of Lube's-n-Greases magazine about this brand new group. There is also a definition of each group.
Group 1 base oils contain less than 90% saturates and/or have greater than 0.03% sulfur. Viscosity Index is greater than or equal to 80, and less than 120.
Group 2 base oils contain greater than or equal to 90% saturates and not more than 0.03% sulfur. V.I. is greater than or equal to 80 but less than 120.
Group 2+ are Group 2 oils with a V.I. of 110 to 119.
Group 3 base oils contain greater than or equal to 90% saturates and less than or equal to 0.03% sulfur. V.I. is greater than or equal to 120. (As you can see, a Group 3 oil is merely a Group 2 oil with a higher VI. So it's not a true synthetic.)
Group 4 base oils are Polyalphaolefins (PAO).
Group 5 is the category for all other base stocks not included in Groups 1 through 4.
