Fellas I'm kinda ignorant towards bandwidth and connection speed...

But--- My son plays x-box online with many of his friends from overseas as well as here in the U.S..

Many months ago we had AT&T upgrade our connection speed--{Supposedly}...

I also replaced the phone line from our outside box to our inside wall plug with CAT-5 cable...

Well since the supposed upgrade and new cat-5... he seems to be booted offline more and has gone from 5bars to 2bars... He always complains now about how slow our connection speed it...

Granted we live in a small town in Oklahoma so we are not going to have the greatest of Service nor Technology...

I ran a few speed tests... It shows we are in the average speed range...

Ping-47ms Download speed-5.19Mbps Upload speed-0.65Mbps

His x-box is connected direct to the lan line not wireless...

My question is---> will a better router or modem help with speed any?

We have the AT&T 2Wire110 Wireless Adapter as they call it... I would call it a modem or router...

Can anyone give me any information in regards to the quality of this unit? Can I get better to help with internet speed?

Any ideas or thoughts would help...
Thanks

How does it compare to AT&T advertized speed?

Also, if this is DSL, are you using proper DSL line filters to separate Internet from voice?

He was using a wireless adapter made for the x-box and he normally averaged 4 to 5 bars depending on the time of day...

Now that I installed the new CAT-5 and his x-box is hard wired direct to the lan line... and the upgrade... He now averages between 2-3 bars...

I am out of ideas besides the modem or router is slowly going bad... I have no idea if this plays any part in speed... Hence my question...

I have bought him a new x-box for christmas... His box now makes all kinds of noise... Maybe this might help...

Yes this is DSL... The tech that came out to upgrade us really did nothing... he said he was going to upgrade our outside box... I had to leave for work... so I didn't get a chance to talk to him after he did nothing... I really don't know what the average speed is for AT&T... I guess I need to look into that...

I just know My son is not too fond of our upgrade...

We only have 1 line coming into the house... it is a direct feed to our desktop computer and our 3 wireless computers and his x-box... We no longer have a house phone... Nor do we have our Dish DVR receivers connected...

I will also say... since I have him wired direct to the lan line he has not been booted off line but only a couple of times... He just complains of the slow speed or lag...

If you are talking about lag bars for online games, usually in the PC games that I've played the more lag bars you have the worse the connection because there's more lag, so less bars means less lag/better connection. This is opposite of cell phone bars. I don't know if this is the same for the bars on the xbox you are talking about since I don't have xbox.

Getting dropped is a different issue, it could be server problems, whether that's the game server or your isp server or both, you might want to check up on the game's website to see how you could resolve connection problems.

I have did a search for more users of AT&T that have posted their Speed Tests... The basic observation is that AT&T really has horrible service as well as DSL Speed... Many thousands of complaints pertaining to their DSL Speed and Internet Service...

I was just curious... Since I have done about everything I can from the outside box to inside the house... I was curious if a New Updated Router or Modem what ever it's called would help things any?

This 2Wire is 3yrs old...

Just a note... I live in a place where our cell phones are still using 3G... So I guess I best not be asking to much from our Internet Provider...

I have att also in my area a 3meg DL is as fast as i can get nothing faster available, and yes there service for the most part is bad..

here's my info..

and ping..

nothing to wright home about thats for sure...

I don't know about the 2wire modem/router because I don't have one, but does it have a setting to put the xbox outside of firewall (dmz zone that bypasses the router firewall)? maybe that can get the xbox a better connection and lower the ping and lag.

Which AT&T plan are you on? If it's the 6 Mbps down, 768 Kbps up (DSL Elite plan), then the numbers you posted are close enough to not raise an alarm, IMO. I doubt a new modem/router would help much. But you could buy one and try to see if you notice any difference. If not, then return it.

Is it only the xbox that is having issues? If so, maybe the issue is with the xbox itself?

Pete: I will asked the wife tonight and post back... We checked the very same thing about 7 months ago... Called AT&T finally was able to talk to a person that I could understand... After about 30min of talking... We figured out we were paying a higher price for the lower service...The Fastest upgrade they offered was cheaper a month then we were paying already for the slower service... %$^&^*&!!!! Was I upset!!! They supposedly upgraded our service to the fastest service that they offered and sent a tech out to upgrade our box out side the house... Well as I said above he showed up, but didn't do anything to the box...

I really don't have anything nice to say about AT&T... I will ask the wife tonight about our service and check their website...

Yes it might also be the old x-box... Like I said I have bought him a new one... It's in the closet awaiting christmas day.... Hopefully that will help...

wk: I will have him check that tonight after he gets home from soccer practice...

The family really has no other issue with the laptop speeds or desktop speeds... so maybe it just might be an x-box issue...

daman: Dang I guess I should be thankfull for what we have, after seeing your great service! Sad!

Also, does the 2wire router/modem have an upgradeable firmware, if so, check/update to the latest firmware.
