Sorryfor the dupe. I did a search on "Ballistol" and nothing came up in "ALL" forums.

Good article from civilwarguns, though.

What's next? A link to hexamethylenetramine tablets? At least that stuff doesn't smell.

I meant Esbit, in case it wasn't clear. Another ancient product that's been around for a very long time.

Well Moribundman...I guess you have an issue with the primitive chemistry of Ballistol. I'm sure there are packs out there that blow Ballistol away, but.....

I've been dealing with two troubling issues for the last twenty years. I never thought the two issues would converge in a strange way. Issue number one, I've been looking for a non toxic, low tech alternative to expensive, pseudo sophisticated gumn oils. Issue number two, I've had a case of tinea versicolor for twenty years now. Well, the Ballistol does lube my guns in a low-tech way, and since I've been schmearing my boddy with Ballistol after a shower, the skin fungus is going away. My wife loves the anise scent, she just has to wait till the isobutyl fumes have wafted away.

Clears skin fungus, lubes guns...how can you diss such a product

I was being supercilious. Ballistol is great for uses other than long-term lubrication (it's hygroscopic). Even the maker of Ballistol makes other products for gun maintenance and preservation. As you said, Ballistol is non-toxic and an excellent disinfectant, fungicide and germicide. When my cat had an infection on his paw the vet told me to apply Ballistol, and it worked fine. Ballistol can also be used on leather, though I wouldn't. Its use as laxative for humans is common.

Moribundman,

I've heard of neo-ballistol, which has a synthetic base. Does Klever make other gun-specific products? I'd like to know, maybe pick some up on my next trip to Yurp.

Thanks,
Gigi

Klever gun-specific products:

- GUNNEX 2000 (gun oil)
- ROBLA Black Powder Solvent
- ROBLA SOLO (lead remover/bore cleaner)
- SUCOLIN and SUCOLIN EXTRA (gun tow)
- BALSIN (stock primer, oil and finish)

NEO-BALLISTOL is regular Ballistol with mint flavor added. For use on people and pets. Bon appétit!

Mori,
Why not use Ballistol on leather? I have a pair of riding gloves that were molded after 15 years of storage, and it cleaned and softened them up great!

I don't know about putting my hands in previously moldy gloves...

Ballistol emulsifies when in contact with water. I don't think that's necessarily what I want in a leather care product. I also prefer a leather care product that contains some wax. Ballistol would be very good for lubing folding pocket knives, because it's non-toxic.

Well, this thread made me curious and I went ahead and got me a small bottle of Ballistol. It smells just like I remember it. I certainly would not use it on leather because of the smell. Now, I hear it's fine for cooking...

Ballistol contains the following:

pharmaceutic quality pure "white oil" (synthesized from paraffin oil): CAS-Nr. 8042-47-5
"oil acid:" CAS-Nr. 112-80-1
C-5-alcohol: CAS-Nr. 78-83-1; CAS-Nr. 137-32-6; CAS-Nr. 100-51-6

The disinfecting properties are due to the alcohol content.

The following are the ingredients in Neo-Ballistol, which is suitable for human consumption (for cooking - Ack! and as a laxative) and also for use on skin. 5 ml (3.9 g) Neo-Ballsitol contain, according to the bottle and packaging:

Kalium oleinicum 0.41 g
Ammonium oleinicum 0.027 g
pri. d-Pentylalkohol 0.14 g
Äthanol 0.1 g
Ol. Menth pip, 0.02 g
Ol. Anisi 0.002 g
Paraffinum subliquidum 3.12 g

In English this should be something like:
