Ballistics By The Inch

All the more reason I need a .357Sig carbine. And how I can kill a deer with my .357 Mag lever let alone my .44 Mag lever.

I get to shoot my .45 Carbine tomorrow. Sweet,

And my AK-47 Variant. Maybe I'll bring a 1911 for some sophistication.

Textbook of Small Arms has some interesting "Rules of Similitude" (basically a dimensionless analysis comparison technique) that gives really good analysis in rifle cartridges of barrel lengths and velocities etc.

Tried messing around with piston cartridges, and it doesn't work that well.

I think with the pistol cartridges, every inch of length is close to a multiple of a case volume, making mathematical techniques trickier.

Yourlink makes a good read.

My admittedly quick analysis of the tables showed me that of all the pistol cartridges, the .357 magnum got the most performance increase from longer barrels. All of the pistols got some help, but not the raw numbers or percentages near the .357 magnum. On Marlin Owners, the hunting crowd claim they can kill hogs, deer, and some cases black bear out to 100 yds. I have it as a compliment for my revolver for home defense. Probably more gun than I'll ever need; but better to have and not need.....
