This is the only appropriate answer here.
If sap is dry and baked on, your best bet is to carefully pick away as much of the dried sap off as you safely can and then soak the spot in Isopropyl alcohol until it's soft enough to wipe away. Dried sap is a real PITA to remove.

Nail polish remover is acetone I believe, that will damage the finish quick.

Isopropyl alcohol does the job no matter how stubborn or baked on the sap, without damaging the paint.
No butter, mayonnaise, lipstick, goose grease, flame throwers or Lord knows what else necessary.

Would be nice to have a few things on hand. Not all tree sap is the same, so not all the same solutions work.

IPA is a top choice. Also good to have a few solvent-type products like tar remover.

Paint thinner - did NOT work
Bug & Tar remover - did NOT work

Could soaked IPA towel might be the trick? soaked paint thinner made very little difference. It is on the roof of the car, so it is difficult to apply good pressure.

May be it is something different? There are many runs from front to back of it on the roof. It seems as if it got there while the car was moving but it is only on the roof and not on the trunk or hood.

+1 That is what I use. It will take some time but if you soak a towel in IPA and let it sit on the sap then use a PLASTIC razor blade to help lift the sap. It will take a few rounds of this but it will safely remove the sap.

PLASTIC razor blades?

MInera spirits will dissolve sap without harming the new water based clear coat. Try on door jam or other hidden area first, though. Rinse thereafter.
