I`d bought some PP 5W50. Shook the bottles as always, opened the first quart, and the top layer of oil was covered in suds. Looked like when you have an almost empty bottle of dishwashing soap, add water to it to make it go further, shake it up,and the top will be sudsy. That`s exactly how the PP looked, like sudsy dishwashing soap. I added the first quart and it poured thin as water. The bottom of the bottle was covered in a brown/gray layer of what resembled "cracked dried mud". I added the 4.5 quart total (every bottle was like that). Started my car and had very low oil pressure.

Well,I was so freaked out by that I drained it immediately and re-filled with Mobil 1 10W40HM. Oil pressure was back to normal and she runs smooth as silk.

What was up with the PP?

Possible you got the bottles from some jerk that put the PP in has car and refilled the bottles with old oil or? Did you carefully check the bottle seals before opening?

Good call on draining it out - there is definitely something up with those bottles. I'd be calling both the NAPA you ordered it from and Shell to alert them of the issue.

When you're in a hole, stop digging!

Why did you keep adding it?

Pour it back in the bottles and take it back to NAPA!

Probably the additives settled near the bottom. And with a grade like 5W50 I'm sure it's not a big mover.

Knowing Pennzoil is a mighty cleaner, maybe it was all detergent and no oil?

I would've stopped at that point. I wouldn't have poured the first bottle in.

Where did you buy the PP 5W-50 from?

I also have a case of Quaker State Ultimate Durability 5W50 (that`s what the case box says, though quart bottles say Q-Horsepower). When I shake these bottles,it just looks like good ole thick motor oil. No suds, and no crud on the bottom of the bottles. No more PP for me,I`ll stick with Mobil 1.

I would call Shell monday and ask for the people who did the Q&A for BITOG. I'm sure they would be interested in seeing what's up with their oil from a QA standpoint and taking care of a BITOGer.

Please let us know what you do to follow up and how it goes

video tape yourself opening a bottle and then contact Pennzoil customer service about it. they will probably send you a whole new case. Most big companies offer a Satisfaction Guarantee

5-50 is the slowest selling viscosity out there. Your bottles were probably 5-7 years old.

Why are you using 5-50?

What vehicle / engine / year?
