If I got bad gas....I should be getting engine knock for the entire time the car is on ?

Lately, I've geen getting engine knock but it's only been when the Engine is COLD and only for 5-10 minutes.

If you have bad gas it should be through out the entire operating range. I recommend you change brands of oil. If you are using an 0W30, it may be to high on the 30W side and it is causing the knock. Did the oil you used last winter cause this problem? If not, go back to your old brand and weight. JMO

It was previously was running RL5W30 up until about 1000 miles ago (18,300 miles) and now running GC. Would't the 0W allow the oil pressure to build up faster. Besides, the knock only started about 2 weeks ago and I changed the oil well before 2 week.

The weather probably became colder the last 2 weeks and also the oil may have thickened slightly on the low and high side in the last 1K miles. I would stick with the Red Line if you did not have any problems with this oil. GC, just like any oil is not right for all engines.

I have run 0W30 (not GC) and 5W30 (RL) oils in my wifes Mazda. The 5W30 runs smoother in the engine in the winter than the 0W30 did.

Are you talking about valve tapping sounds which may become louder with colder temps. or knock from bad gas which would manifest primarily under load (eg. acceleration or when going uphill)...and wouldn't go away after '10 min'.

Sounds like cold engine sounds eg. valves. All is OK if they go away when the engine warms...just take it easy (ie. no full throttle starts) until the engine reaches normal operating temp. Otherwise, it's a new/newer BMW for chrissakes...why are you not running premium? 87 is for beaters...

The car calls for 91 octane. I usually just fillup at the local station with 93. Just did a fillup with half tank full of 93 with the next grade down - 89. Gas is usually at the local Mobil Station .....never have used no-name gas.

As far as the noise, it may be valve tapping noises ? Can't say for sure....all I know is I hear a consistent *knocking sound* when I start the car if the engine cold and it goes away after 5-10 minutes. I did not notice it last year however, I may not have been so astute & aware of all the noises, performance, etc the car makes since getting HOOKED over at BITOG ;-)
