Back to changing my own?

I had to quit doing my own oil changes before I left the Army as my health deteriorated. I’ve clawed back some of my strength with ten years of PT and a recent change of diet. I bought a new 24 Bronco Badlands Sasquatch last week and it has me thinking of starting up again. Our ‘22 Maverick hybrid** just popped up with the time to change message*.

One of my hesitations is that neither of the newer cars seem to work well with the mityvac I bought years ago to make things easier — 2.5l hybrid & 2.7l ecoboost***. Correct?

* yearly, none of our vehicles see many miles. ** will be leaving g with our son when he leaves (for) college in 2-6 years. ***the other two are a the tritec in my MINI R52s and 5.4l V8 in my wife’s 14 Navigator.

Doesn't the Mityvac come with a few different suction tubes. Mine did. Have you tried them all?

How about a Fumoto valve or Valvomax?

With one of those you can reach under with your hands. You don't need to get all the way under?

Where is the filter?

The Bronco should not be very close to the ground.

Haven’t tried it - just going off what I read.

I’m sure there’s enough room under the Bronco. I do have ramps or jack to use with the Mav. It’s just the vac would make it so much easier.

I think clearly you need a 4-post lift. For health reasons. Some people get a walker, a wheelchair, crutches or handicap parking. Have your doctor write a note: 4-post lift strongly recommended to maintain proper personal and vehicle health.

You're joking i guess, don't forget to tell the doctor he needs a pro personal master mechanic available 24/7/365 .

The one at my shop has like 6 or 7 different ones in length and width.
On some engines it's tricky to get the tube all the way down to the bottom.

Get the $14 electric extractor from Amazon...better than the vacuum extractor but on a Maverick its just as easy to do it the old fashioned way unfortunately. I can PM you a link for the extractor if you want it.

On the Maverick the hazzle is getting off the underbody panel. Not hard but a hassle. Get Rhino ramps...

Like you I was crippled up at the time and got pumped up getting it done.

If you have the means they're doing cool things with hobbyist lifts now like the QuickJack.

Mityvac won’t do it on the 2.7 - the dipstick is not directly exposed to the sump according to the owners’ manual.

Oil comes fast out of the 1” drain plug on the 2.7. You’ll learn after the first change or two. On the F150 the sway bar is immediately in the path of the drain flow - wear eye protection the first time. If this is too much and it’s a low mileage car, consider letting this one stay with a professional mechanic and taking care of the checking levels and keeping it clean. Dress the tires, keep the weatherstripping clean, carpet and interior/exterior. Pay for good oil!

In all seriousness I've long maintained this can be a valid argument with municipalities and even HOAs (good luck) for "tools not common to a residence"
