B&S break-in

First off, thanks to all who helped me with regards to engine replacement.

Ill soon be recieving a B&S intek 212907-0028 9hp engine, that is almost exactly like the previous engine (except its newer and an OHV design).

So now the question is break-in and oil choice. Ill say right away that we use Mobil 1 10w30, 5w30 and 5w-40 at our house, and have lots of it. I will be using Mobil 1 10w30 in the engine since it has no VIIs, and B&S claims that 10w30 syn can be used at all temps. The Mobil 1 has a nice additive package, and although it is a bit thin, I think will allow cooler operation and ought to run well. Will change it twice a year (40 hours or so).

That said, I doubt these small engines have the advanced manufacturing processes that car engines have, so I dont want to make the initial fill synthetic. I dont have any 30 weight oil, but still have some supertech 15w40 HDEO from thelastengine.

My thought is to fill it up initially with the Super Tech 15w40. I know its not the right weight, but it will have good additives, and ought to be pretty close to a straight 30 wt. in the operations we use it in. After the initial setup, run, and then the first mow, Ill drain it, and go to Mobil 1 10w30 permanently.

Any cons to this choice, particularly regarding the 15w40 use? It seems from searching that a lot of people are against using anything but straight 30wt dino in B&S engines - theyll use 15w40 in other brands but not B&S; but I figure its a break-in fill anyway, and wont be in for long. But itll clean everything out from the manufacturing process, and leave quite a bit of AW adds on the metal surfaces.

That should be a strong engine!
It's the same block, crank, piston etc. as the 11 & 13.5 HP Intek (216900 & 21B900 series).

One thing I also forgot to add when discussiny what the type#'s mean is the charging system provided on it.
The engine you are buying has 3A (DC) charge + a 5A (AC) lighting circuit.
 
I hope that wont be too much power from the charging circuit!

I just wont use the 5A output, this will allow the engine to have less parasitic loss and ought (maybe?) to give the alternator a bit more life.

It really won't make much difference.
Your new engine will have a lot more power than the old one.
The OHV engines tend to have a flatter torque curve with the peak torque much closer to your "mowing speed". The Flatheads tended to have a peakier torque curve that was maxed at lower RPM's.
The 5 Amp output is AC, so it can't be used to charge the battery. It's for lights only. The 3 Amp is DC and for charging the battery.
Even using 5 Amps @ 12V is only 60 Watts, or < 1/12 HP. You'll have HP to spare!

IF you can find the torque spec charts for your engine and compare them to the 11 & 13.5 HP versions, I think you'll be pleasantly suprised.
Typically, the main difference in the different HP engines of the same "family", is simply the size of the carb. When the engines are bogging down, the smaller carb isn't affected as much by the reduced airflow being pumped through the engine.
 
A decent HDEO oil should be just fine. I’d pick one with moly if I had my druthers. I run either DELO or Schaeffer’s in my B&S flathead, and have for around five years. The agency I work for uses HDEO in just about everything from from its trash pumps, generators, and sprayers to its Dodge Cummins and Ford Powerstroke diesels.
 
Sounds like a nice motor. I would say that the Super Tech 15w40 would be a great oil to break in this moter. I would say fill run the Super Tech for an hour dump it and run anther fill of the Super Tech to five hours. Then I would start using syn if the motor stopped using oil from break in. But since I read that you had Mobil 1 5W-40 I would have to say that I would suggest that oil over the Mobil 1 10w30.
