16.5 hp b and s riding mower

What oil does everybody use in their b and s lawn mowers? Thinking about straight 30 weight or Rotella 15w40 or the T6 5w40, any opinions?

I like T6 for my OPE, but straight 30 10w30, or 15w40 would all work just fine. Doesn't Briggs recommend synthetic 5w30 now?

SAE 30 will reduce consumption if the engine burns oil. But since I'm from Michigan and it can get below 40 Degrees in the winter. I prefer to use a Multi-Grade (5 or 10w30) because I start my OPE every month in the off season.

Does any body run bigger filters such as the motor craft ones on their Briggs, any oil pressure issues with that?

B&S factory oil recommendation is 5w30 synthetic or 10w30 conventional. I use 10w30 PP. My B&S 20HP twin consumes no measurable amount of oil during a stand CCI. Ed

15W-40 works really good with in its temperature range. What does a bigger filter have to do with oil pressure?

For OPE that specifies a 30 weight, Rotella T5 10w30 is a good, reasonably priced choice.

Straight 30 in older stuff and synthetic 10W30 in newer stuff.

You don't want to put synthetic in a older worn out engine unless you like a lot of smoke.

I read some where that a bigger filter could cause lower oil pressure, was just wandering if any truth behind that

I use Mobil 1 10w30 in my 21 HP Briggs Craftsman mower. I also use the MC FL910 filter.

I don't believe there is that big of a difference in different brand small gas engines. And I say that, that because I have a Kawasaki, and took off of B&S oil recommendation for there full synthetic recommendation. So for the B&S owners, you can learn off of Kawasaki oil recommendation that they have 10w40, 40 and now even 20w50 in there oil recommendation. So yeah, 40 and 50 weights are fine for your engines. So with your pick, T6 5w40 would be my first pick if you want to use a full synthetic, Rotella 15w40 would be my first pick for conventional oil.

30 straight weight is the only one of your choice that is recommended in B&S oil recommendation, but just not a fan of that choice. If the 40 weights are so wrong, consider this, straight 30 weight is tons more thick at start up than 40 weight is at operating temperature.

I am running a Wix 51348 on my John Deere D140 with the Briggs and Stratton V-Twin without incident. This filter has significantly larger displacement, 8-11 psi bypass setting, and it costs half what the smaller OEM filter does.

What is the oil pressure you are talking about? Very few Briggs and Stratton engines have a pressurized oil system, to include most of those with an oil filter. They have a tiny oil pump which is strictly there to run oil through the filter, but most engines are splash lube.

I haven't bought SAE30 in years. I typically use 15w40 in all my larger air cooled 4-stroke OPE, with exception of my snowblowers. They get 5w20, 5w30 or 10w30. Which ever I have on hand.
