The "Lawn and Small Engine" forum seems to be all about oil so I am posting this here. If a mod. wants to move it, no problem.

My lawn tractor has a Briggs & Stratton single cylinder OHV 15hp engine. The air filter gets really dirty, with dirt caked on the foam that covers the paper element after a few hours running. Anyone come across a better system? I am thinking something like removing/cutting the hood or side panel and fitting a large filter box. The existing air intake is in about the dirtiest location it could be. A used oil analysis on this engine would be scary I think.

I makes you wonder what the designers were thinking when they place an air intake in a dirty location. Considering that filters are rated in percentage of particles removed, it's just simple logic that the cleaner the air you feed the filter, the cleaner the air you get out. That's a good observation about the intake, re-routing the intake would be a good idea.
