AWD Transmission Fluid - Blend

Im about 20k miles with my SAAB92x and I am planning to change my transmission oil (manual) and I ve been reading a lot on variosu subaru boards and many people have used this blend btu i still have some reservations and lately ive been reading a lot on this board and like some of you folks with much more exp and knowledge about blending (garage mix) of the following 3 oils for use in transmission

1qt Redline lightweight shockproof
1qt Pennzoil Synchromesh
2qt Castrol HypoyC 80w-90

Don't bother blending. Just buy a good synthetic gear oil that meets the requirements.

Since you probably want GL5 protection level, Motul Gear 300, Redline 75w90NS, RoyalPruple Maxgear, and Specialtyformulations MTL-R are some straight up choices to try.

Blending isn't always the best choice. I'd love to see a VOA of the above mixture and a used oil analysis of it after 30k miles to see if its as good as the 'fad' claims it to be.

Supposedly synthetics dont work well in the SUBARU transmission. MAny have tried and switched to nonsynth and trouble dissapears - grinding

Best advice, listen to it and ignore mixing fluids advice for these people know not of what they speak.

Sometimes, I think people just make of this stuff (mixing fluids) in hopes of seeing how many they can con into following it.

I hear you can get better mpg if you have all different tire sizes on your car, thats about as crazy as mixing fluids IMO.

Ok I will be using a non mix - non synthetic oil
So which non synthetics i should use ? I have syncros and the same oil is used for the front differentials

As far as non-syn, I've had good results with Mystik.

That looks like Uncle Scotty's Cocktail. Are you having grinding problems or problems downshifting. If not, stop at your local Subie dealer and pick-up a few quarts of whatever they use. goixiz is correct. Subie manual transmissions don't seem to respond well to synthetics.

yes you are right but i didnt want to use names and just point out the ingredients. No i dont have any issues at all. Its just time to change factory oil (my pref).

I use Specialty Formulations MTL-R in my Subaru transmission.

As to the cocktail, what is its final viscosity? Are the EP additives reduced in concentration? Seems to me those who use the cocktail could be trading increased ring & pinion wear for improved synchro action.

I had a Saabaroo 92X, and I put Specialty Formulations MTL-R in the manual transmission, and SF's HDS-5 in the differential. VERY NICE shifting...much better than stock. I also could get just over 37 mpg at 62-64 mph on slightly rolling terrain with these fluids in. Dropped to just over 30 mpg at 80 mph. I sold it at 20,000 something miles, as I got a job where I had to travel with passengers, and the 92x just didn't have enough room. Fantastic little wagon!

I now have a Subaru Forester and a Legacy Limited...both automatics, but, both have HDS-5 in the front transfer case and rear differential. When the time comes, I'll probably use some SF automatic fluid, if one is made.

Onemore additional question - SO many choices why MTL-R from specilaty Formulations. Are their oil a blend ?

yep, a Linear it was. I bought Specialty Formulations because of Molakule, the fellow on this board from SF. I like what he says, and trusted his knowledge about gear lubes. They make very good products...just ask Terry Dyson!

Some subaru boys have reported good results with valvoline I think it is. Lots like uncle scotty's. I guess the syncros don't come up to speed quite right with some synthetics or something. I have a couple subaru's but they're AT's.

I have in garage 3 qts of Valvoline (non synth) 75w90 and 1qt of Pennzoil Synchromesh. I know im taking a risk but i may use this for a few thousand miles and see how it goes if i dont get a firm answer from specialty Formulations (next week)
