An inherently unstable design, fly-by-wire, thrust-vectoring, auto-canards and a top pilot make that possible.
 
What Mori said...mostly the pilot, though I don't see any thrust vectoring on the exaust. As impressive as this is, all that fancy maneuvering means nothing in combat. If one is flying that slow when the chips are down, you will be dead soon. I'd like to see one of these side by side with a F-22.

Yep. I got see that at the Nellis show a few months ago. They did do some very impressive things with the F-22, but nothing like the SU-30 is doing. The turning radius and "snap" was unbelievable on the F.

The main thing about the F-22 is the stealth package. It is very difficult to detect. I think it was on Future Weapons that they interviewed a Raptor pilot and said that it was only challenging when they were out numbered 5 to 1 by the OpFor...and they are flying F-15s!
 
F-22 is a an awesome plane. I've always thought that was the best looking one too. In general, who has had historically a better AF between Russia and the U.S.?

The F-22 is even more impressive on the inside, besides the flight characteristics and stealth! the F-35 is the next generation beyond in avionics.
 
I disagree with Tempest a bit. Fancy maneuvering can be useful in certain combat situations.

"Sukhoi deputy general designer Konstantin Marbashev told Chris Pocock, from Aviation International News, at the Paris Air Show, that the TVC flight test program with the Su-37 prototype had been completed and that many changes were made along with successful testing of the system in yaw as well as pitch, and with differential thrust. Now this confirmation brought the Su-37 VTC evolution into a new level of capability from what we have just seen a year earlier at the Farnborough Air Show. In fact, with "yaw" now as an interactive part of the pilot's control inputs, the Su-37 could exceed the maneuver potential of the F-16 VISTA, the X-31, and the new F-22, because they are either yaw-channel limited or require yaw-thrusters.

Yaw control, integrated with the pilot's standard rudder peddles, which in the fly-by-wire Sukhoi jets are not dis-abled and retain mechanical-electrical backup mechanisms, offer greater tactical freedom to the pilot once committed to the ultra-close dogfight that will feature VTC maneuvering. In-Close, Stay-Close, and Kill-Close would be one way to defeat the new generation of all-aspect, high-off-boresight missiles such as the R-73, Python 4, MICA-IR, and AIM-9X. Obviously one has to survive the transit from beyond visual range (BVR), to within visual range (WVR), to inside of minimum range. Once there however, both Western and Russian gun systems are capable of all-aspect, high crossing angle kills at ranges inside of 1500 feet. The final problem, of course, would be surviving the explosion and resulting trash that would follow the kill."

I agree maneuverability is very important. That's why they put thrust vectoring on the F-22. I'm just saying that the maneuvers on the film are all low speed, impressive to watch and pull off, but they will only get you killed in a dog fight. High speed maneuvering/turn radius is what makes one prevail.
 
I'm going to disagree again. There are many, many examples of slower aircraft prevailing in a dogfight. Top Gun instructors often flew nearly obsolete aircraft such as A-4's, F-5's etc. and gave the trainees flying F-14's a very hard time.
 
You guys are both right - plus I will weigh in - pure speed can get you in trouble real fast, however it can get you out of a nasty area REALLY fast. (Note F104 vs. MIG-X) In the hands of a great pilot, the great pilot wins. I learned a lot from the Dogfights marathon (TOTALLY GREAT SHOW, BTW)

Agree, but I would love to see an example with the victorious plane traveling at or below stall speed. Not to mention what the bad guys wing man would do with you.

Better pilot is almost always a more important factor than better airplane.

Agree that the dogfight show is awesome.
 
Yeah, but those engagements were stacked against American planes; usually outnumbered by 3 to one or more, and the Americans not able to use their most advanced systems, etc.
Not to say that Russian fighters aren't good.
