I installed AVG last year after having Norton and Spysweeper before, and have noticed that at first it pulled out a lot of cookies when it scanned and gradually got less over time.
Now when it scans there isn't anything removed.
I hope that means nothing got in to need removing.
I do have the best program they have to offer, so, is it that good?

I just uninstalled AVG after I noticed their free version doesn't cover as much as the free version of Avast. Been using Avast on another machine for years and have had zero problems.

Avira is another great AV scanner and has a free version. I prefer Avira over Avast for the interface and recommend it to my clients as a free alternative to NOD32 or Kaspersky.

The only thing you will need to contend with is the pop up to register for the full version after every update, but there are well documented ways to put the notifier in its place(super easy).

My first choice is the free Microsoft Security Essentials.

Another good free program is Panda Cloud antivirus.

Also Panda Cloud antivirus is now Windows 7 certified.

Not a good idea to run more one anti-virus program at the same time.

I used AVG for a couple of years. It was OK. Then I switched to Avast. I liked that better. However, it periodically "expires" and nags you to install the latest version while trying to upsell you to the commercial version. So....I recently switched to the free Microsoft Security Essentials (I think this is what used to be called Windows Defender). So far, this seems to work OK on both XP and Win7 for me.

I periodically do a sanity check by running Malwarebytes and Spyware Search and Destroy (both free) to see if anything is getting through the cracks.

I use Avast on this laptop I'm on and it updates fairly often, sometimes 3 times in one day.

Now I use AVG on my desktop because I can shut it down when I log in under my gaming profile where as Avast would not allow me to. Even when trying to disable Avast through Windows Services, it denied me.

I was a long time AVG users. Recently I replaced it with MSE. I was researching on this subject some time ago and saw that MSE gets pretty good scores in third party testing of various antivirus softwares.

I switched to Microsoft Security Essentials too. It seems MS did a decent job on it, and it gets good reviews ... can't beat the price either.

I got rid of AVG Free and got Avira Antivir free. I like it better.
AVG used to be fine, but went downhill in the last few versions.
