AVG vs Avira vs Avast BEST?

Windows XP Home and Pro:

1. Boot into Safe Mode (tap F8 repeatedly after you restart the computer)

3. Go to C:\Program Files\(Avira)\AntiVir PersonalEdition Classic\avnotify.exe
4. Right-click avnotify.exe-> properties-> security-> advanced
5. Under the Permissions folder you will see all of the users. Start with the first user….
6. Edit-> Traverse Folder / Execute File-> deny-> ok
7. Now perform step 6 for all of the other users-> apply-> yes/ok-> close all open windows
8. Reboot the computer into Normal Mode (start-> shutdown-> restart)

I always use the first one listed for XP systems. The other I do not know but it looks like it is for Vista.

It'd be interesting to see how it compares to Avira, assuming the same subset of files is scanned. Avira claims "up to 20% faster scanning", but compared to what? Must have been written by the marketing department.


I have a P4 3.2 Ghz processor. At full speed it takes about 25 minutes to do a full scan with Avira. But it runs at 60-65 degrees C, so I always run half throttled (stays at about 48 degrees C). At 1.65Ghz, it takes about 35-40 minutes to do a full scan.
