I recently switched from MS Security Essentials to Avast Free Anti-virus. When I try to pull up a web page I see the Avast Icon rotating for several seconds before the web page opens. I realize that Avast is checking but, is 3 to 10 seconds a normal time for this? Ed

See if Avast online security is enabled and disable it. It's in your browser Add-ons. Been using Avast for years and it runs fine here.

I had the same problems with the Avast plugin. I stopped using the software altogether, but you should be able to disable the plugin itself.

I've noticed when you first boot up, it may take a few minutes, but once it's done checking, it's business as usual.

Yup; had the same problem when I used Avast. Even without the plugin, Avast will still check web pages and web traffic for malware.

Agreed. Been using it on two of my machines for the past few weeks - seems very hands-off, unobtrusive, and lower memory footprint than AVG Free, which I'm still running on one of my PCs.

Yes.

Thank you ClutchDisc. I will disable ONLINE SECURITY now. Seems like I may be disabling something good though? Ed

This is precisely the reason I like approaches like that of ESET where they filter the traffic at a level that doesn't require a browser plug-in. Zero visible impact on system performance and exceptional results.

Avast will still scan your webpages without that, the plug in is more of a thing to tell you if the website has a good reputation or not. I've been using Avast for over a year on my windows computer, and I don't use the plug in. I did try it for a little bit and it isn't necessary at all.

How is Avira in terms of using CPU and RAM resources and bogging down an old computer?

I also have this disabled in FF29, and Avast has been pretty good on my laptop.

Pretty good. I've put it on a number of machines recently for people who didn't want a paid solution.

Good to know - thanks. I might uninstall Bitdefender Free and try Avira.
