clerk at advance tells me the store brand is havoline...its alot cheaper too...anyone know if its the good stuff or could it be a cheaper blend of havoline?

Good job WOODY, CHEVRON-HAVOLINE dosent make ANY lubricants for Advance Auto. Like Woody says it states that on the back of the bottle.

Woody, I don't doubt what you, but do you have any idea why they would say that?

Probably because AAP is concerned that the bottle "too closely" copies the Havoline "look" --- thus subtly inferring it is the same or "as good as"...which it is not in my opinion.

I agree!

I believe Coastal-Unilube produces that oil for AAP.

I'd use it without hesitation, as long as it met or exceeded the API specs called for in my vehicles owners manual.

No sense in spending too much on oil. I have come to the conclusion that as long as an oil meets the proper API spec. & you are changing the oil according to your owners manual, then motor oil is motor oil.

Probably true..but when we know how good Havoline, MC, Conoco is seems reasonable by buying one of those or at least a brand you know something about. I just don't like the idea of pouring something out of a bottle that I know nothing about. That's just me though.

I didn't give up on it. It's just that GC is soooo last week; didn't you hear?

p.s. The last paragraph in my previous post should have read as follows:

As long as an oil meets the proper API spec., & meets or exceeds all of your vehicle manufacturer's recommended specs (ACEA, etc.) & you are changing the oil according to the maintenance schedule in your owners manual, THEN motor oil is motor oil.

Very true, but when I last inquired (and posted) in regards to this very same topic a few years ago, AA corporate was very quick to respond to my inquiry, and linked me to the appropriate coastal unilube product data sheets right away. Any house brand that you can get the data on, is just as good as a name brand IMO.

G/luck

I believe your right, looks like the exact bottle and is on display next to havoline. And say's not Havoline on it. They told me it was SHELL oil.

Advance Auto doesn't offer an AA brand of 15w-40 HDEO. Instead, notice that AA sells Warren Unilube Coastal Fleet 15w-40 as its "house brand" HDEO. Warren Unilube appears to be the supplier of all AA "house brand" oils. I've been thinking of trying Coastal Fleet 15w-40. The price always was pretty good, in pre-Katrina days anyway.

then motor oil is motor oil.

Idunno about that.. I think for most engines, this is true- I have an isuzu rodeo, 3.2L... it has these hydrolic tensioners in the valvetrane... the little holes in the bottom of them that the oil has to get in and out of as it goes up and down to keep it "pumped" up and in tolerance, are very very small...A small amount of varnish or sludge and they tick like crazy. The adjusters are also prone to taking on air pockets... Isuzu found that 0w30 weight synthetic oils are better at purging out the air in the adjusters, and also keep the little hole clean- not to mention, they flow better through the little hole....

GC was the quietest My lifters had been in a long time- now I'm well into an ARX rinse phase now, and they are even quieter, but rest assured, i'll be using GC and LC20 together to keep those suckers clean and flowing correctly from here on out.

So- for my engine, Some oils truly are superior. For some engines, you could probably run em on vegitable oil.

On the original posters question- I have heard so many different responces to the question of what is in the bottles at AA... Penzoil, QS, Coastal.. It's probably very decent oil, that will work fine for most folks. Coastal seems most likally.

Old Tom told me it was Havoline. But uh, the bottle was probably enough to convince him. Guy figured it might have been Pennz, but said it was more likely was something different altogether. So Coastal sounds likely for the motor oil and trans fluid. I suppose I could ask about it.

Alright, well it is definitely Warren Unilube, and the transmission oil too. No doubt about it. I don't know when the back of the bottles started saying specifically that they weren't Havoline (as they didn't always), but the "compare to havoline" was certainly where the confusion started, especially with the bottles being so similar.

Much like the AA brand oil filters, which as we know are NOT Fram, but rather Purolator-made. Heck, in some cases they're just rebadged Premium Plus filters, in other applications they have less media. Although I'd still take it over a Fram, especially if price counts. Though right now most Purolator PP filters are 2.44 at Advance now anyway.

Anyway, it's good oil for the money. It's not hard to sell it to people looking for a decent inexpensive motor oil, coupled with something like a Purolator PP. If it meets the specs, and you change it like you should, it will do just as well as other popular dino oils.

Not exactly staggering. There was a recall on 10w30 Havoline in the gallon bottles within the last month. We were instructed to dump it all in the recycle bin. So obviously, Havoline is garbage.

Anyway, I certainly understand the caution with less expensive oils. But they aren't all junk.

since people think housebrands suck, at least it's spec'd SL/SM oil and they aren't getting that Accel SF junk at walmart for their new cars
