My brother's Sentra's starter is going to go bad soon. I'm going to replace it today. I'm planning on purchasing it from Autozone. It is Duralast (Autozone brand). It has a lifetime warranty, and I read somewhere that Autozone honors their warranty's.

Are autozone parts reliable? Any expierence with their parts?

Most of the parts replaced on my '89 Olds came from AZ. The only problem I had was with a water pump, which was replaced under warranty.

We bought an alternator from them and it was of good quality. lasted the 150K Km's (90K miles) we owned the car for.

I would buy that brand again even if it's a 40 minute drive to the U.S.

if it's easy to change, get in the zone. if it's a real pain, and he wants to keep the car a while, get a factory reman unit from a discount source.

Any of the well known part stores usually are OK, if not they would have disapeared years ago. Chain outfits do not stay in business selling junk, not saying there isn't a bad part here or there.

Good to hear their parts have improved. Years ago they were junk. I have been using O'Reillys but may now consider AZ.

AZ has been a mixed bag for me.

Duralast Starter- Good
Duralast Gold Brake pads (rear)-- lasted 1/3 of the factory pads, squealed.

Duralast Gold Brake pads (front)-- lasted as long as factory, but had no bite.

Duralast top motor mount-- good
Duralast lower dogbone motor mount-- lasted 300 miles before rubber pushed out, plus the design is not the same as OE.

Yeah the brakes are the pits... I bought the ones on my Santa Fe from them and I have had to turn the discs already and have vibrations again because the rotors are warped...

Wouldn't buy those again.

I installed a set of NAPA Adaptive One pads for the rear, which still have over half left after 30k.

For the fronts, I installed a set of remanufactured calipers, new hardware (guide pins, guide pin boots, clips), Hawk HPS pads and Chinese Rotors and now the car actually stops in the same zip code.

I like the Duralast parts, they are very well made, they have a lifetime warranty and in a lot of cases they cost less or about the same as the lower quality and/or less expensive parts from other stores that only have a one year warranty.

I have Duralast ball joints and inner tie rods on my truck and have had absolutely no trouble with them. It may be way off topic but I also really like the Duralast wiper blades too.

If you don't have it already be sure and get an AZ Rewards card. Make 5 $20.00 purchases over a 6 month period and get a free $20.00 AZ gift card.

Shop I worked for used Autozone for reman starters and alternators...and good amount of them go bad again within 12 months. Gotta love warranty work :P Or even better are bad out of the box so you get to put it in multiple times.

The warranty will be good.
But count on using it!
Parts store starters and alternators are notorious for crudding out sooner than factory parts.
Bosch makes good rebuilds. There are others.
For a quick part at a good price, the Autozone part may prove good for you.
But Don't get your hopes too high.

My results with Autozone parts have been spotty. I've got LOTS of bad parts over the years... but they'll always readily exchange them.

Seems that once I get a good one, they hold up well enough. It's more of a quality-control issue, I think.

For my purposes, I use autozone parts on my old beaters, especially for parts that are fairly easy to replace and won't likely leave me stranded. Autozone is CHEAP, and you get what you pay for to some extent. If I want parts that will last longer, perform to OEM specifications... or if it's something that I REALLY don't want to break... then I go elsewhere.

I used AutoZone rotors on our old 1998 Civic and my brother's F-150 they were pretty decent quality.

Back in the late 90'S all i could afford was AZ stuff, starters, waterpumps,alternators.. anything with a moving part was flat JUNK.. I almost always buy from Napa now, and cant comment on AZ's current products.. if they have improved im glad to hear it, i got really sick of replacing the same part over and over from them. but on the flip side im a much better shade tree mechanic now thanks to AZ, got very good at installing and removing there parts !

I've used an AZ fuel pump in a old Toyota Cressida with no issues. I also had luck with a DuraLast battery.

I wouldn't trust a chain store reman starter/alternator. I would order one off RockAuto or a parts house - and ONLY a major name although I had a AC Delco reman alt bite the dust, but it was a Denso - not a Delphi/Delco-Remy alt. I'm sure if it was a Delphi or Delco-Remy one it would have been a different outcome.

AutoZone Remans come from Remmy they are much better than years past. The industry has seen return rates on rotating electric fall from 30% in the 80's to the single digits in the last 5-7 years with improved quality control etc.. also you would be surprised too see the number of different brands the same part goes in the box.
