AutoZone has a deal for 5 quarts of AutoZone oil and an STP filter for $9.99! Does anyone know anything aboout this oil? Who makes it? I would be buying this for my 87 Jeep wrangler that only sees 2-3k miles per year, with yearly oil changes.

It's the same oil as the previously branded "Coastal" oil. You'll find several posts on the subject. Five qts with a filter is a great deal...have no worries.

5 qt jug of SM rated oil and a filter for $10 is a killer deal, no matter what name is on the label.

Both the oil and filter would be perfect for a reasonable OCI, 4k-5k. Since youre only going about 3k, should be just fine.

Are you sure it is SM rated? The autozone by us sells an SA rated oil for "older" cars (defined as pre-1988, IIRC), and then a regular oil, which Im sure is recycled or left-over stock from a previous API cert.

The autozone oil by us was API SL long after SM oils hit the shelves in bulk. I have to guess that the old stock became autozone oil.

Good Question. I have no idea, Im not an oil expert like most of you.
Here is a link to the page:

That's a pretty good deal on Mobil 1 as well, if I was a user of Mobil 1. I think those filters are ~$10 alone, aren't they? If the AutoZone oil is SL or SM, use it!

That is a decent deal on Mobil one, but advance auto has $30 for 5 quarts of EP and a filter so it is better!
So anyone know how this autozone stuff is rated?

The "for older cars" oil is the Valucraft oil and it's not SA rated. The Auto Zone oil has SM specs. The old stock did not become Auto Zone oil...this is merely a renaming of the "Coastal" oil that Auto Zone used to carry. Same oil, different bottle, same specs.

I think you are thinking of the wrong oil. The Valucraft oil for older cars is SL rated.

Thanks Greenaccord!

Ok I am going to stock up on some cheap oil.

What weight should I use in a 1987 Jeep Wrangler? It is an old school carburetor 4.2L. I think the owners manual calls for 10w-30, does that sound right?

Caring about the content of and who makes a generic oil seems counter-intuitive. If you want assurance and formula info, buy a name-brand.

The other oils I saw were API SL.

I didn't look for ILSAC information...

And just for the record. at least some "Valuecraft" oil is rated a nice, stout SL!

My father uses the 10W-30 Valuecraft SL in his lawnmower..

I was talking about the one in the orange bottle with the Autozone logo on it. I did look at the ValuCraft - it did say SL, just as you say. I don't remember an ILSAC rating on it.

I picked up 25 quarts of it today : ) and it is SM rated. This is a good deal imho! especially for oil for a beater car etc...
