What is the general opinion of the Autozone house brand of engine oil labeled as full synthetic? Is it as good as some other synthetic oils out there and is it worth the price or are there better options? Looking for an engine oil to use in my sister's 4cyl Chrystler which sees cold starts, short trips, infrequent maintenance (if I don't keep track and do it, she wont). Does not appear to burn or leak a noticeable about of oil, even after switching to Napa brand synthetic last change...

While they may be sourced from different blenders, most of the "house brand" oils are pretty much the same...they're decent, but not awesome. The lower price comes primarily from not needing to support an enormous marketing budget.

In short, they're perfect for your intended use.

It's the same stuff as Walmarts supertech synthetic. It's 17 and some change there. I want to say autozone is 25 something?

Just picked up some Havoline Synthetic At Advance Auto's Oil Change Special w/Puralotor Pure Oil Filter, $21.99. This oil looks like it has very good low temperature oil flow. (I'm no oil expert, but I'm learning...thanks BITOG!) But it has an ave. TBN # which not may last as long as other oils? (In my situation w/having just bought three 5+ qt. jugs of Havoline Convention oil, I'll do a blend of 2qt conv w/1 qt synthetic. Perfect for the Protege's 3.1 qt. sump!) Sorry, don't know whom supplies oil for AutoZone. Napa's synthetic I'll read is Valvoline, which I personally have come to the conclusion recently is an OK oil.

I would be using Mobil 1 Extended Performance and a high mileage filter. So if she goes 15k between changes it won't damage the engine.

It is Dexos approved. It is blended by Warren Distribution. I have run their conventional and it did well. Definitely good for 7500 miles.

From personal experience my sister does the exact same thing. Good thing for my well being see lives about a 4 days drive away. She just does a oil change about once year at whatever quick lube place and junk's her car when it is about 10-15 years old and the engine is fine. Something else will be bad when it is junked I would just leave her car be. You will be blamed when something like the fuel pump gives out or the transmission is shot or even when a tie rod breaks or the biggest kicker there is a cracked block.

You do not want to know how I came up with this response.

If your in Walmart, I'd go for Quaker State full synthetic at that price point.

I am currently using the Warren synthetic (actually Peak) right now with good success.

But I got it for practically nothing a Pep Boys a couple of years ago on Black Friday.

Seems like its not a very good deal compared to oils at WAL-MART.
If you have a store near you I bet you could get a SOPUS or Mobil product for the same money.
