Autolite RJ19LM replacements suck/E3 good

So I was at advance and for the heck of it picked up a Autolite replacement (like $1.80) for the Champion RJ19LM(E3.10 for the e3 plug) and pulled the e3, stuck it on. Holy cow. It ran like crud. Took 2 pulls to start it, and even then it just barely coughed to life. Did this every time. Always a goodly amount of smoke when shutdown (always smokes a little on shutdown, always has. Does it more now that I have a TON of techron in the gas). It missed occasionally, chugged when getting up to speed, seemed to have poor power. Gapped at .035 (Same as I gapped the other one) I pulled it, placed the E3 back in. It started right up first pull, didn't stumble or anything, no misses. Very little smoke when shutdown. Huge difference from the Autolite. I was amazed.

The Autolite was made in Mexico
The E3 was made in China.

In short.. E3 plugs really do work in at least Briggs OPE.

My Briggs twin likes either NGK or (gasp) bosch 2 dollar plugs. As long as they are gapped properly. It does not like Champion plugs. The Bosch or NGK's are regular copper plugs, no split, iridium, etc. Champions seem to work well in little air cooled 2 strokers though.

I like champs in all my garden equipment and my riding mower/push mower. Made in USA and cheap enough to replace yearly. I did try E3 in my blower once though, after a week of use the thing went to garbage and made it harder to start.

The RJ19LM at advance were all made in mexico, and I didn't have any issues with the E3 all last season, so maybe it was just a fluke.

This is funny that this topic came up. I been wanting to try the Autolite in my lawnmower. I have had excellent luck with Autolites in my 3800s.

the autolite replacement runs to cool compared the the champion rj19lm look at the too plugs you will see the autolite is to far recessed. I too tried the auto lite in a 6.75 briggs and it ran terrible, missed, sputtered, surged. put the old plug back in ran like new.

The OE plug that came in my 675 was a uh.. RJ19HX, which is the same size, but I'm not sure what the difference is.

I put E3's in all my mowers, chainsaw, even the ATV. They run great with them. I even put a set in my Jeep and they work great.

I run E3's in practically everything. I'm really thinking about switching the truck over if I find a shop that stocks them in automotive sizes.

So after some searching, I found out that the OE plug, an Champion RJ19HX, is a racing type plug because it has a thinner electrode and is at least one heat range hotter than the RJ19LM. Said that the spark system on engines they come in is a bit hotter and more powerful than the usual one. Interesting.

I just put one of these Autolites in a 4.5HP Tecumseh on a 4 cycle Lawn Boy that I picked up a few weeks ago (used for $40). It runs fine. I had an E3 in it for a little while, and it runs no different with the Autolite. The E3 was brand new (lady gave it to me when I bought the mower). I put the E3 in my mother's push mower. It seems like a fine plug, but I can't justify spending 3x as much for it over the Autolite.

I just put one of the Autolites into my Craftsman/Tecumseh engine and haven't noticed a problem. Is it possible you just got a bad plug?

I am happy with the Autolite irridium fine wire and have had no problems. I do not think the correct heat range plug matters to performance, and I have not been able to prove it with a tachometer. I use the better metal fine wire to make it easier on the ignition components. I am not sure even that matters.

Which Autolite plug # did you use?
