Hey guys,
Just wondering if anyone has up to date info on these filters, reviews, feedback, etc.
Most information I've been finding is pretty old or not comprehensive.

5,000 miles ago an Autolite can was put on my S-Type and from what information I could find, they're not good filters. It is also around this time that I found out S-Type oil changes are good for 10,000 miles on conventional oil. I was going to run the car for 10,000 miles until I read up on the filter the shop used on my car. I used to change at 3-5k with purolator classics, so I'd assume the inside of my engine is ship-shape.

So any info is appreciated. Any suggestions as well?

Is there any documented info behind that, or just your opinion?

I'm tempted to change the oil just so I can cut the filter open...

Autolite has been owned by Fram group since 2011 so it only makes sense that they are rebadged extra guards. I will email Motorking and he should reply here.

Oh the Fram part you said I'm pretty sure of as well. I was asking about the 5k suggestion

GT,
I am the tech director at FRAM. Couple things- The Autolite branded filter is nothing more than a FRAM Extra Guard with Autolite branding for commercial use only. The S type does go 10k between OCI's if and only if you use conventional oil rated at API SL and ILSAC GF-3. That is critical. That said, the Eg and Autolite filters are designed for 5k oil changes and should not be left on the vehicle for 10k. The FRAM Tough Guard is designed for 10k OCI and the FRAM Ultra is designed for 15K OCI's. Be careful, if that S type is a V8, the timing chains and guides do not tolerate using poor quality oil and are an expensive repair.

The oil I used was Mobil Super 5000 5w30 which is API SN and ILSAC GF-5, so I think I'm covered there.
The engine itself is the V6 3.0, more commonly known as the Ford Duratec engine. I've been on Jag forums and have confirmed that these engines are totally fine on 10k conventional oil changes. In the 5200 miles I've covered, I had to add one quart of oil because it went low, so the engine isn't burning much oil
Bummer, I wanted to make this OCI 10k but the filter doesn't give me much confidence

If you want to go til 10,000 miles you need to use a top rated filter such as Fram Ultra or at least the ToughGuard
I will not run dino that far though-use a synthetic or a blend from a name oil

GT,
The Autolite filter is a 95.7% efficiency filter that holds enough dirt for 5-6K oil changes. That is all we rate it at. We make two other filters (Tough Guard and Ultra) that go 10k and 15k respectively. At this point you could just change the filter and leave the oil alone but the bottom line is that no brands entry level price point filter is rated for a 10k oil change. The tech/shop that did your oil change should have installed a filter rated for the 10k oci but most shops have very little knowledge of what is inside a oil filter.

Thanks for the info. I was looking into the filters that you guys offer and was wondering what's the difference between the extraguard and tough guard? I know they're rated for different miles and have different filter efficiencies, but the construction looks pretty similar. Both have paper endcaps as well I think. Just wondering, that's all

^^^ Yes, construction is basically the same between the EG and TG but different materials are used (media, ADBV) and the TG probably has more media area too.

Just curious, the shop put in a 5,000 mile rated conventional oil and filter for a 10,000 mile OCI vehicle. Did you tell them you wanted to do 10,000 mile OCI? What's the oil capacity? Does the manual state 10,000 mile OCI's on conventional oil?

In bullet form for easy reading...
-No, I didn't tell them I wanted to run for 10k. The entire life of the car I've been changing at 3k with conventional oil because I assumed that's all conventional oil was good for, silly me. OCI isn't even stated in the manual, but if you look closely at the service book, it states 10k miles on conventional oil. It's also what the manufacturer recommends. I now have no problem running the Mobil Super 5000 oil for 10k miles. Any conventional oil with the proper ratings will work just fine.
-Oil capacity is 6.2 quarts. I usually just put in 6 quarts for a nice round number and it's worked just fine. Never needed topping off between changes. But a weird thing happened with the Autolite filter was fitted. Car took 7 quarts. Never in my life have I seen my car take 7 quarts, but the shop showed me the levels at 6 quarts and they were right. It needed another quart. I'm guessing the filter has extra capacity vs. the STP and Purolator Classics I've been using...
-Unless someone gives me a STRONG reason not to, I'm going to run this change for 10k. I know the filter is rated at 5-6k, but this may be the last change I do on the car (getting traded soon). All my driving is suburban with not much in the way of dirt. I'm sure 1 OCI at 10k even with the wrong filter attached won't detonate the engine. Oil is still a lovely shade of brown, so would there be sludge?

Clearly you don't want to listen. You were told by a rep of an oil filter company that their own filter wasn't up to the task of a 10k change. Not to mention that the oil that was used, Mobil Super 5000, is marketed as an oil that is intended for 5000k changes. So, you want to run a conventional oil at a synthetic oil length using a filter that clearly isn't up to the task. great luck with that. Remind me to never buy a car from you. "Some people you just can't reach..."

I can't speak for the filter, but XOM will guarantee all their oils for the factory recommended OCI, provided the oil in question meets the specification for the application and is of the appropriate viscosity. Incidentally, that usually goes for the filter, too, despite what a rep or customer service person might say.

Oil changes always become a passionate subject for some folks, doesn't it?
No conventional oil will be rated at 10k, but that's what Jaguar recommends. As long it's has the appropriate API and ILSAC ratings I'm confident the engine will be fine.
As far as the filter is concerned, I'm aware it's not rated for 10k. But others have reported running the filter for 10k with no adverse effects. And if this is the last oil change I do on the car which has been getting changes well below the factory OCI all its life, running this change for 10k is hardly the worse thing I can do.
Unless someone tells me something catastrophic will happen from using the filter for 10k I'm ok with it.

Something interesting I noticed from fram.com the extraguard is listed as a compatible filter for my car, and the main product page says the filter is rated for 5k. But there's a footnote saying: Follow recommended change intervals as noted in your vehicle owner's manual

Does that mean this filter for certain applications this filter can actually be used for more than 5k?

Yes if the manufacturer specific a longer interval.

Most if not all companies want you to change fluid, filter ... more often than needed. The more often to change oil and filter(s) the more products they can sell their bottom line will be fatter.
