There is strong evidence that the number of publicly disclosed automotive ransomware attacks is only a fraction of the true total. Many incidents are never disclosed.

Who is keeping it a secret that their car got hacked and they were asked to pay ransomware? Seems like a lot of sensationalism.

That was my sense of the article, too. Still, the potential is there for it to get a lot worse and it seems like a growing trend

I don't know much about the software in cars. What prevents a reset of the software back to factory settings from thwarting this threat.

The things is that cars today are much more integrated with centralized manufacturer systems. Phoning home and Internet connected, too. Not everything is running on ROM memory anymore which makes the system much more susceptible to hacking.
