Not the best written article but has some stats and info about car hacking trends. Apparently, they are claiming that ransomware is the biggest car hacking trend right now.

That was my sense of the article, too. Still, the potential is there for it to get a lot worse and it seems like a growing trend

I don't know much about the software in cars. What prevents a reset of the software back to factory settings from thwarting this threat.

The infected software has to be able to accept a reset which can be blocked if hack is good enough.

The things is that cars today are much more integrated with centralized manufacturer systems. Phoning home and Internet connected, too. Not everything is running on ROM memory anymore which makes the system much more susceptible to hacking.
