what really makes it so much better? This is not a thread to start a war, but a serious question. I have a 92 Galant with a SOHC 2.0 w/ AT and 140k miles.
when you pop the oil cap, you see some varnish, but really no sludge.
wondering if i should run a cleaner and why auto-rx is so much better...versus just dumping in MMO and draining 1k miles later...
she has no leaks and burns about 1-1.5 qts every 3-4k miles, just like my 2001 F150 with 92k mile 5.4L.

LOL! AUtoRx is an ester-based cleaner(100% solvent-free) whereas MMO is solvent/light mineral oil mixture.

Oil burning on all Mitsu engines are a norm, esp if you have raked up some serious mileages on it. This has more to do with the seal materials used and overall engine designs. I've dealt with more oil-burning Mitsu engines than anything else and virtually all serviceman/engine rebuilder will agree.

All mineral-based motor oil shall have a bit of varnish (brown looking coatings) but not sludge if proper OCI is being observed.

Personally, I don't care much about visual things like varnish but more to do with overall mechanical "health". AutoRx works beautifully in cleaning up oil passageways obstruction and such, esp. hydraulic tappets/lifters/buckets. It may/may not clean out those visual coatings depending on whether that coating comes into regular contact with motor oil. Vapourised oil film deposits causing varnish coatings, AutoRx may not be able to clean it satisfactorily.

Auto-Rx:

1) Cleans slowly and gently, unlike harsh solvent cleaners which can break chunks of sludge loose in your engine causing all sorts of problems;

2) Is excellent at cleaning the ring packs on pistons, thereby helping to improve sealing, compression and oil consumption;

3) Probably other benefits I haven't mentioned here.

My '95 Civic had about 53K miles when I ARX'ed it and even though it was virtually sludge-free (this engine has no oil baffle at the filler hole) I certainly noticed a difference both in engine smoothness and oil consumption. I do have a testimony posted on the ARX website but I'm not sure if saying where would violate BITOG policy so I won't say where.

Thanks! and one more thing, forgot to say, I do have a nice little lifter ticking going on...not bad, slightly audible.

Check to see if your Galent has a manual valve lash adjuster arrangement or not.

If, after adjusting the valves and you still getting ticking sound, I bet it's the fuel injectors "ticking" and that's a norm esp. when you rake up the miles.

Thanks....will do...I'm 99.99% sure it's not the injectors..you can almost feel the tapping when touching the valve cover.

When I first came to this website and Bob owned it he said that Neutra would clean an engine (I think it was 1 oz. per quart of oil added about 500 miles before an oil change). If somebody can't afford Auto-RX this might work for that person since you can also use Neutra for fuel system cleaning.

There are a few people who have said that Lubegard engine flush is really good or that BG engine flush is really good.

Personally myself I really like Auto-RX. It is safe and does not cost that much. A maintenance dose of 3 oz. might last 2 years if you do 2 oil changes a year. If you do 4 oil changes a year a bottle will last 1 year. Auto-RX does not seem that expensive to me.

also, what are the odds it will foul my plugs? IF i were to run it in my 2001 F150 with the 5.4 and the near-impossible-to-change plugs.

Good luck getting ARX to clean your plugs. Frank says not to use in a 2-stroke engine, so I don't know how it what it would do to spark plugs. I also question everyone saying it works great at cleaning piston skirts. I don't really know how much oil gets up their unless the car has oil squirters in the block.

I would say that ARX would in no way contribute to plug fowling. Cleaned up ring packs, providing for better ring to wall sealing should help compression maximized, leading to more complete combustion. Although this does not mean cleaning up plug, it would likely contribute to longer plug life.

I suspect the esters in Redline Oil would do some cleaning.
