I am considering a pre-emptive strike against sludge/varnish in my VW 1.8L Turbo using Auto-rx. What concerns me is that the instructions on their website are to use dino oil for the "rinse" phase.

I have always been told that running dino oil in a turbocharged engine is a huge

Now I'm scared to try this stuff. Would LC be a better option for me?

What say the oil judges?

Since the oil is only in there for 2-3k miles, Dino is fine. I even used wally-world 10w30 in my Mitsubishi turbo. If you are really concerned, just use Castrol GTX. You will be fine.

I would suggest a 10-40 or 15-40 depending on your ambient temp. conditions. That's what Euro. cars used before synthetic, so you should be safe....

I had the same concern in my '89 Mazda MX-6 GT. (2.2L turbo) Before ARX, the only non-syn that was EVER in there was the factory fill. I'm using Chevron Delo 400 15w40 (factory vis. is 10W-40 anyway) and I believe it is one STOUT oil! The ARX benefits have been significant and quick. Great stuff.

If you're concerned, Group III "synthetics" such as Rotella T 5w-40 are approved for any phase of ARX (clean and rinse). Since these oils (Delo and Rotella) are HDEOs your engine should be just fine.

I'm near the end of my first rinse phase (197K miles). Clean phase 2 starts this weekend.

If you're talking about PCMO's, then I'd agree with you.

I'd recommend either Delvac 1300 or Delo 400 15w40 for year-round use in your 1.8T.

No need for ARX...just change on regular intervals.

Wayne,

If you are not trying to fix any leaks, it is fine to do the clean with Full Synthetic and then you can do the rinse with a Grp.III oil. In fact I have done a clean and rinse using Full Synthetic. I did not have any leaks to worry about.

I'm still on the original turbo at 225,000kms on my Mazda and all it's life used dino I believe. Three RX cleaning cycles with dino for clean/rinse and now syn with RX maint dose. Runs better than ever!

Update from my ARX process - I have a '89 Mazda MX-6 GT (same engine as Sprintman

) and have been running Delo 400 for the first clean and rinse phases. With a recent cold snap cold cranking was getting a little tougher. So for the current clean phase I am actually running the Rotella T "syn" 5W-40. Cold cranking was much easier this morning.

Your '89 Mazda made me think of my old '90 MX-6. I loved that car. I bought it in '93, shortly after my Dad died. I was only 20 years old & my Dad didn't have a chance before he died to teach me what I needed to know about maintaining cars. He was a life-long mechanic. I could have learned a lot about cars from him.

If I had serviced that Mazda regularly, I would still be driving it. Unfortunately, it died a slow, agonizing death due to OCI deficiency. Oh, well, RIP Mazzy.

How long are you planning on keeping your MX-6? They sure are fun to drive. Just curious, how many times have you had to replace your air intake hose. I had to replace mine twice because it kept cracking on the bottom. This would make the car want to die if I tried to accelerate slowly.

Wayne,

First, I'm sorry for your loss.

I need this MX-6 GT to last at least 3 1/2 more years (we can't do 2 concurrent car payments!). BTW, I'm the original owner. I'm at 197K on it right now. Original clutch. Need to rebuild the turbo. Still on the original throttle body boot. I am running a manual boost controller, turned up just below fuel cutoff, which should mean I'm at 10-11 pounds.

I agree, this car has been fun - and faithful. I could go on, but this is SO

Use Delvac 1300 15W40 for the rinse phase! It should do just fine in AL. even dureing winter. Delo 400 should also work. These are built for Turbo Diesels so you should be just fine!
