I don't know if this has been covered, and I have a hard time getting the search function to work on this forum.

I picked up a new-to-me diesel, and I'm starting off with Auto RX. I've used it a few times, and I like the results I get.

I'm considering using a bypass filter set up for the diesel, 7.3PSD, and I want to know if anyone has any experience with using Auto RX with one either in a clean/rinse use and or as a maintenance dose.

Thanks!

My thought on this is do the ARX clean and rinse. When you finished, you can install the Bypass filter.

You can use ARX as maintenance with a bypass filter.

However, doing a rinse and clean with a Bypass will be a waste since you have to do OCI in short period of time whereas the idea of bypass is to extend the OCI.

In a diesel like 7.3 PSD with more than 12 quarts per OCI, that is a lot of money so a bypass with good synthetic can extend the OCI.

Bypass filters, like synthetic oils, make sense if you're going to get your money's worth out of them. They can surely control your soot and extend your drains.

Depending on what bypass filter system you were going with, I would wait until you're done with Auto-Rx in an unknown engine. If it was a MG or other TP or PT filter, who cares? The media is cheap enough. If it's an Oil Guard or just about any spin-on bypass setup ..then wait.

Haven't decided on a filter set up yet. Didn't have one on my E350 dually, but it was higher mileage and a little ugly. This new to me one is quite a bit nicer.

The 7.3 Powerstroke diesel engine will last 500,000 miles with ordinary oil and ordinary filters. Exactly how will a bypass filter pay for itself? If you extend the oil drain interval (almost forever) and the price of oil continues to rise, maybe. Otherwise, the bypass probably will never pay off. Don't forget to factor in the rising cost of filter elements. If you're using toilet paper, factor in the cost of the replenishment oil.
