In the USA, I find that Mobil 1 0w40 or GC 0w30 is the best for the 2.7t in the S4 with a 10K mile OCI. Or for the 4.2 for that matter. Equivalent Amsoil or Redline products are fine, also. In the winter, Mobil 1 0w30 is great as long as the car is driven moderately and the oil is changed at 5K miles.

Who drives an S4 moderately? Can you even run a turbo moderately?

He's changing it constantly due to his driving style and set-up and also looking for the ZDDP/moly boost. Pretty stout HT/HS there.
He probally considers the Syntec a extended drain fluid.

People here could argue that one of many top oils work well in the 2.7t. Personal experience, recommended by another person, price, availability, difficulty in obtaining either more or less obscure, whatever. Any and all mentioned are great. The only real problems I see is when an inappropriate oil is used for an inappropriate period. Get whatever you like but in this case a narrow visc range is needed, right at 12cSt from what I can see. My mechanic would probally use the drum Syntec 5w-50 but he is relying on personal experience and erring on the side of caution. Perhaps he'd send out for the 0w-40 Mobil but 5w-50 is Mobil's best selling grade in Europe where (ahem) C.A.F.E. is not an issue.

Quattro Pete was kind enough to post the link to by UOA above. I've used Mobil 1 0W30, Mobil 1 0W40, Amsoil 0W30, and now GC 0W30. The S4 just turned 134,000 miles and it still uses less than 1/2 qt between 5-8k OCI's. Honestly, the majority of those 134,000 miles were on Amsoil (I'd guess 80k of them), so your mechanic is full of BS saying that Amsoil is no good for your engine. I can say that I like the feel of the GC better than the Amsoil, maybe because it's sligtly thicker, but any of the above oils will perform well as refelected in my used oil analysis.
Congrats on choosing a great car. I hope to keep mine a while longer. Now stop worrying about the **** oil and go drive the car!
