If you want slightly firmer shifts, the M1 ATF will work. It tends to provide slightly firmer shifts.

However, buying a case of Mercon V from the dealer is far cheaper, and it is very good fluid.
 
Valvoline Maxlife ATF DOES NOT meet MERCON V(it does meet Mercon and LV) and as such would not be compatible in this transmission. Valvoline does make a Mercon V which he could use. The mercon V spec is pretty stout. Take it a step further with amsoil universal or Redline D4.

They (valvoline) need to update their labels as it only states MERCON and MERCON LV on not only gallon jugs, but quart variants as well. Makes me nervous honestly. If its good enough to meet Mercon V, then label the product as such. Thanks for the info Undummy.
