I have heard that the best detergent to use in an engine is ATF. An old local mechanic buddy of mine said it will disolve varnish and keep the ring lands and lifters nice and clean. He recomended one quart of ATF and 4 quarts of a quality motor oil (he likes Motorcraft or Citgo) in an oil change in older vehicles.

Any truth to this? I figure someone here will know the correct answer.
Any harm in this??

Thanks

The best detergent to use is to be found in a good oil. Do a search. This topic has been covered many times. AFT lacks the detergency of a good oil with a good additive package. You cannot go wrong with German Castrol, Redline, Amsoil, Schaeffers, or Mobil 1.
