Hey oil gurus...being I can't find Zep45 ANYWHERE, I was wondering if a 50/50 mix of ATF & Diesel fuel would creep/wick into tight clearances, offer rust protection and add some lubrication qualities?
Thanks for any feedback or suggestions for a homemade mix.

Machinist’s Workshop Magazine recently did a test to determine which brand of penetrating oil worked best on rusty bolt / nut combinations. They scientifically rusted the threads on a group of nut/bolt combinations then measured the torque it took to remove the nuts after they had been soaked with various penetrants.

Here are the results….

No Penetrant 516 pounds
WD-40 238 pounds
PB Blaster 214 pounds
Liquid Wrench 127 pounds
Kano Kroil 106 pounds
ATF / Acetone 53 pounds

I didnt do the test i am not sure how accurate this info is or what test was used.I am a fan of pb blaster myself and rost off is another good one but kinda pricey.

I've used the AFT/Acetone mix with good results.
You MUST use glass or metal containers for it. It eats plastic.
I mix it in a glass canning jar and use a metal squirt oil can to dispense it.

Thanks for the feedback > but, I'm also looking for some slight lubrication quality.
Wanting something to get between the tight leaf-spring pack and other suspension parts on my boat trailer.

That test was far from recent... Still interesting to see.

I've been using WD-40's specialist line for awhile now, and have been plenty happy. I'm not familiar with the diesel/ATF mix. I have used straight ATF before, and while a specific penetrating oil would be better, it did it's job, and everything looked great.

Question...is the Acetone delivering the ATF into tight spots then, once the Acetone evaporates it's leaving the ATF behind as a lubricant???

I use a mix in my Sure Shot that is a mix of ATF and any solvent that is handy, sometimes that is diesel, and it works just fine.

I've used a "2 stroke" made of 1:10 ATF , and thinners to lubricate .22 rimfire bolts.

It cleans, and then evaporates off, leaving an ATF film.

I use a mix of GL-5 gear lube and coleman fuel. The EP additives in the gear oil really help the bolt/nut from seizing up once you get it broken loose initially.

Here's what I don't understand:

Bought some acetone today at Walmart. It came in a plastic bottle.
All the ATF I am aware of comes in a plastic bottle.

Does something about mixing the two make it eat plastic? Because certainly each one taken alone is fine in a plastic container.

It depends on the grade of the plastic.

Google Ed's red gun cleaning formula. I thinks 1 part ATF 1 part keresone 1 part mineral spirits 1 part acetone (optional if you want real good clean).

Good stuff
