Uh, a 42RE is NOT a FWD transmission. The R in the name is for RWD. The 4.0 Grand Cherokees (excluding early 93s that used the AW4) all had 42REs from 93.5 - 04. 96 - 98 5.2s had 44REs.
A 42RE is just an overdrive 904, same as the 44RE, it's just not as strong.
The AW4 can be swapped in, but it's a bit of a PITA to do it without CELs, etc. A 44RE won't bolt up to a 4.0, unfortunately. However, some of the internals (and some other beefier parts) will fit into the 42RE case. It can be beefed up a lot during a rebuild.
