ATF+4 substitutes

Uh, a 42RE is NOT a FWD transmission. The R in the name is for RWD. The 4.0 Grand Cherokees (excluding early 93s that used the AW4) all had 42REs from 93.5 - 04. 96 - 98 5.2s had 44REs.

A 42RE is just an overdrive 904, same as the 44RE, it's just not as strong.

The AW4 can be swapped in, but it's a bit of a PITA to do it without CELs, etc. A 44RE won't bolt up to a 4.0, unfortunately. However, some of the internals (and some other beefier parts) will fit into the 42RE case. It can be beefed up a lot during a rebuild.

Thanks for the input! I think an aw4 swap would be cheaper, but a beefed 42re would be more logical. Also should note I don't plan on replacing the trans until I begin a new motor build, which will begin after suspension/drivetrain projects. Maybe a new computer designed to handle the aw4 and a turbo 4.0 would be nice!

+1 the Super Tech ATF+4 is officially licensed by Chrysler.

Our WM stopped carrying ATF+4 so I used Valvoline ATF+4 in our caravan.

Any that has ATF +4 on the front will be a fine and licensed by Chrysler.

Those transmissions have been picky in my experience.

I'll do the band adjustment and filter change as well... it has 140k and im not sure when the last change was done, but the color is still a nice purpley-red.

Use only ATF+4.

If you build a 42RE, a stock ECU (with SCT tuning) will run a turbo 4.0 no problem.

Anyway, thanks for the replies! I thought to do a little high roller comparative shopping for Amsoil and RP, between the prices listed on Amsoil's site and Amazon for RP... RP is cheaper on all accounts beside Gear oil. Actually Red Line has the better price for Gear oil, but more expensive than the other two for AF and Oils.

I'm not sold on going to a high grade product like that, as I've got another thread going and several members said for my change intervals, I'd be wasting money, and ought to stick with the cheaper stuff.

Does anyone have any experience of using one of these higher grade ATF in their Chrysler transmission?

Well, not specifically, but I know Red Line has a C6? liquid that's for all chryslers, and Amsoil is apparently blended to spec. Royal Purple, was an assumption, lol. I like RP, but just not sure I'd get any real performance from my stock stuff. I'd love to keep things cooler though.
