Because "the ATF+4 spec" is not just a performance specification. To meet the ATF+4 specification a blender must use the specified Lubrizol additive package as well as the specified Group III base oil.

Supertech ATF +4 is 3.77 a quart at Wally World down here in Tx as of last night.
They were not carrying any "Mopar" brand, but it is all the same. They all have to go through the same tests and use the required basestocks to use the copyrighted name "ATF+4" which is owned by Mopar.

I just bought 4 quarts last night for some work I am going to do on a buddy's van later on today. Might need more than 4 quarts, but I think I have extra in my stash.

Maxlife dropped almost a point in viscosity earlier this year to cover the "mpg" ATFs like MerconSP/LV and DexronVI.
Valvoline also has a specific ATF+4, MerconV....for those that don't want a univ-multi ATF.

unDummy,

Do you mena by "mpg" ATFs that they yield better gas mileage?

Yes. Thinner ATF means less viscous drag in the transmission, which can (theoretically) translate into an (infinitesimally small) increase in MPG.

Probably because now that licensed ATF+4 can be sold outside of the Mopar label, covering ATF+4 with Maxlife was taking away too many sales from Valvoline's licensed ATF+4 product.

I wish Valvoline made a Max Life version of ATF+4-there's a huge market for it with all of the older Jeeps/Chryslers on the road that require it. I currently use Valvoline's "normal" ATF+4.

The maxlife ATF does meet ATF+4, Valvoline has a contract with Chrysler that does not allow them to advertise it as meeting ATF+4.

My source: I'm a valvoline instant oil change employee and we were informed of this internally and it's why we continue to use maxlife ATF in chrysler's that we service in our service centers.

Why would they have a contract that says that? That makes no sense.

Use the ATF+4 and don't worry about it. To be ATF+4 you need to use highly stable base oils and the Lubrizol additive pack. Anyone who wants to make this can sign up with Chrysler to do so.

It's not worth gambling on multi thousand dollar transmission over saving $10 on transmission fluid.

An "instant" oil change facility that does not use the correct fluid for a given application. What a surprise.

The licensing requirements for ATF+4 have been posted on here many times. Maxlife DOES NOT meet those requirements. Period. End of story.

i'm just passing on what we were told by the Valvoline Corporate, I would assume that they have access to more information on the maxlife fluid specs and wouldn't tell all of their corporate locations to use maxlife atf in chrysler transmissions if it wasn't compatible.
