ASTM D 4294 is an upgraded D 129 testing methodology for the determination of sulfur in lubriucating fluids.
D 4294 uses X-ray fluroescence to determine amount of sulfur and sulfur species.
D 129 uses a combusted (oxidized) sulfur with subsequent washing in a barium solution, which yields a barium sulfate which is then measured.
