Hi, I'm reconditioning a high mileage BMw 330ci with my son. PO used 5w40 with his oil service. I'm fairl;y certain the spec is 0w40. My challenger requires 0w40 to stay in warranty. So, I prefer to run 0w40 in both of our car when possible. the BMW currently leaks a little out of VC gasket. We will be changing that soon. Big question is will I be risking more leaks by switching to 0w40?

No.

The primary requirement for this engine is an oil meeting the BMW LL-01 spec. The actual grade is not that important. You can find some 0w-30, 5w30, 0w-40 and 5w-40 oil that meet this spec. Examples of oils that you can find easily locally and that meet this spec include Mobil 1 0w-40 and Castrol Edge 0w-40.

As far as leaks, well, these engines do happen to leak in a number of places. It's not uncommon. Valve cover gasket is one of them. Then there is the oil filter housing gasket. Some also leak from rear main seal and oil pan gasket. Whatever material BMW used in these gaskets does not hold up to multiple temperature swings and time.

This.

You will need to take your car to a private seasoned BMW mechanic and have all the maintenance work done on your engine (various seals and gaskets replaced), in the meantime I suggest you use a HM 10W40 oil.

My mid 20s son, just out of grad school, bought a 633CSi which needs a "little work".

Good thing he has a Camry for work transportation. He's leaving it here 'cause HIS driveway isn't big enough. I think that means he'll be using MY tools as well. BTW a diffenence of 5 points in the viz isn't going to hurt anything that I can see.

Keep in mind that the 0W-40 needed for your Dodge will not have the same certifications that the BMW will need, so if that matters you'll have to stock two oils. The warranty compliant 0W-40 for the Dodge will likely work just fine for the BMW, but it will not meet the LL-01 spec.

Yup. That's why SOPUS came up with that Pennzoil Ultra 0w-40 SRT oil. And that oil does not meet any of the Euro specs.

Does that mean you get the privilege of knocking the snow off it too? I hear that's currently a full time job in Boston.

It doesn't say this?

For best performance and maximum protection under all types of
operating conditions, the manufacturer only recommends full synthetic
engine oils that meet the American Petroleum Institute (API) categories of
SM or SM/CF. The manufacturer recommends the use of a full synthetic
SAE 0W-40 engine oil or equivalent.

It does indeed. All the SRT v8s (the original 6.1 Hemi like SteveSRT8 has in his 300, the 392/6.4 like I and 392Hemi have in our cars, and the new Hellcat) are spec'd for 0w40 oil. Factory fill was Mobil 1 0w40 until FCA changed oil suppliers from XOM to SOPUS. For one model year, SOPUS had no 0w40 oil so a 5w40 was spec'd (Pennzoil Euro 5w40), then they rushed Pennzoil Ultra "SRT" 0w40 out, and that's been the FF ever since. Once the new GTL PU is available in 0w40 at retailers, I'll try it but I currently use Mobil 1 even though my car came with Pennzoil. Its really hard to beat Mobil 1 0w40 right now, either for durability or availability.

I suppose Chrysler's owner manuals are as inconsistent as some of the other makers. I see the following in the 2012 Challenger SRT8 manual:

Quote:
For best performance and maximum protection under all types of operat-
ing conditions, the manufacturer only recommends full synthetic engine
oils that meet the requirements of Chrysler Material Standard MS-10725
and are approved to MB 229.3 or MB 229.5.

But then they go on to say that the recommended grade is 5w-40, so go figure. Maybe this was prior to Pennzoil SRT oil becoming available. I know that this SRT oil does carry the MS-10725 spec. Mobil 1 0w-40 used to carry this spec, but XOM dropped it due to some political reshuffling when Fiat bought Chrysler and when SOPUS became the oil supplier of choice for SRT engines.

I just went on Chrysler's website and downloaded the owner's manual and user guide for the 2012 SRT 8, that's where I saw that. Neither one has any language requiring the use of 0W-40 nor do either one mention Chrysler Material Standard MS-10725. Weird, I thought the MS would be there at least.

Nevertheless, no language says it is required for warranty, right? The reason it piqued my interest was because the OP stated a specific viscosity grade was required for warranty purposes. So if his manual requires the MS spec and he's using Mobil 1 0W-40 (per his sig) then he's not meeting warranty requirements. If it requires it that is.

So your owner's manual requires the use of 0W-40 to maintain your warranty?

It's just really weird to require a specific grade, the only other ones I know of are Jaguar and the BMW requirement.

To my knowledge, there are no high mileage Euro spec'ed 10W-40 oils out there.

In fact, there are no Euro spec high mileage oils of any kind.

That should tell you something about the necessity of high mileage engine oils.

To the OP's question, I'd use Castrol 0W-40 or Mobil 1 0W-40 in both the BMW and the Dodge.

But the only Pennzoil right now for the BMW is their Ultra Euro 5W-40.
