I'll soon have to drain the Delo 400 15W40 from my '93 Ford Escort's engine. I ran the Delo to help clean things up a bit in the engine, and I do believe it has helped. I had been buring a quart every 1000 miles, and smoking on start-up, but after 1500 miles the Delo seemed to have stopped the smoky starts, and consumption has totally stopped. I've got 2500 miles on the Delo at this time.

I don't believe I should run the 15W40 in the winter around here, so I'm going to swap to a 10W30 in the next week or two (though I may wait until the forecast calls for sub 20 degree temps).

Anyway, I want to continue cleaning the engine slowly, so I was wondering which 10W30 on the market (dino oils only, by the way) would have the best ability to clean.

I can't find the 10W30 Rotella or Delo locally. I do find straight 30 weight Delo and Rotella, but I'm assuming that these oils would not have good winter start-up performance.

Ideas?

Thanks,

Dan

Try some autoRX. After the initial treatment all you need is a maint dose. This chances are this is the best for cleaning up the inside of your engine. As far as the best oil for clean, I would pick RedLine due to it group V base oil, but this will cost more than a quality Group II/III with autoRX.

Try some 10w30 Mobil Drive Clean Plus High Mileage Synthetic Blend for 2.08 a quart .

The name of that oil is a mouthfull

Dan,

A Chevron distributor could order the Delo 10w30 for you. The only downside would be buying a whole case instead of 4-5 bottles.

I believe the auto rx is a good idea as well to help recondition the seals in the Escort. Grab 4-5 bottles of 10w30 dino du jour (Chevron/Havoline would be my choice).

Synthetics would be second.

However, in my experience Syntec has had more cleaning power in my engine than Mobil 1. May be due to the increased group III solubility property or different ester content.

No experience with pure-ester lubes....

I did a freezer test at 0f with Delo 15w40 and Delo straight 30, and the straight 30 won by a long shot. The straight 30 poured much easier than the 15w40 at freezer temps.

I'm running a blend of Mobil 10w30 (can't find a 10w30 HDEO anywhere yet) and Mobil 1 Truck & SUV, which is a 5W-40 HDEO, in the cars. Seems to work well.

Several folks have recently found Havoline HDMO in a 10w30 wt. Would that work for you?

You'll have to do a search to learn where they found it.
