This is getting annoying

Now we don't lock our cars. We live in an older, but very decent, neighborhood. Our city has a very passive underclass element ..one or two murders a year ..typically drug related ..the #1 crime is bike theft ..yes, bike theft ..usually employed as transportation when some low lifes are caught at one end of town and have to get home. They even employ a semi- "pony express" at times ..ditching one stolen bike when a more suitable ride is discovered enroute home. These are typically discarded in the low life's neighborhood and are frequently recovered if the cops have a report on the theft in a timely manner. There are also several bike theft rings in the area. They steal bikes and mix and match various components to mask the original ownership. Upon my fist bike theft ..I purchased an engraver and marked each sub component with my name, address, phone # and (pre-identity theft era) my SS#. The next bike that was stolen ....I got a call from two townships away saying that they found it abandoned on the side of the road. Someone had apparently figured that it wasn't worth "chopping". Anyway ..that will index our "criminal element" in our city. Oh ..we have drugs and this and that ..but for the most part ...nada.

From time to time all the residents on the street will find all their doors ajar on cars that have not been locked. No vandalism ...just open glove boxes and riffled through interiors. Since we own jeeps with soft tops ..we don't lock them up. Although it is very easy to just unzip the rear quarter windows for access, we don't want to risk some jerk using a knife and having that hassle. We don't leave anything inside that's worth stealing ..or if it is ...who cares

.

Anyway, one time, the thief didn't just go through my jeep ...he/she stole the ashtray. We both tend to throw our loose change in it. Okay ..so I go to the ebay jeep store and get a new one ..$19. No problem ..I just figured that they either stole it for another jeep ...or took it as a unit and threw it away somewhere else to save time.

Well two nights ago ...BOTH our jeeps had their ashtrays stolen. The contents, minus the change, was deposited on the floor. Among them were prepaid fundraising sandwich tickets. At first we didn't see the tickets ..and were hoping to catch the kid using them (they're numbered for who sold them and this was a limited event).

Anyway, as near as we can figure, this is a neighbors kid that we know and who has his/her fingerprints on file somewhere and figures that they (the police) would actually go to the trouble of running them to determine who stole an auto ashtray ...so instead of wearing gloves ..they just steal the ashtray.

We've decided to not replace them ..or at least install any replacements that I buy.

Go figure

It's probably just some rabid anti smoking liberal environazi out to save the world from smoking. Even if you use the ash tray for anything but smoking he/she is saving you from the temptation

There are lot of strange people in this world. When I was in high school I knew a guy who used to steal the hub caps off our small town fleet of 3 police cars. First about 1 hub cap a week. Then one night he hit all three cars and took all their hubcaps.

This makes me wonder if there is some alternative use or value which you are not aware of attached to a Jeep ashtray. Similar to the cachet teenagers give to having a Lexus or Mercedes hood ornament, causing thefts.

Its interesting how thieves can create their own cottage industry, as they have done for seats, T-tops, wheels, etc. When insurance companies won't pay the price for new replacements, the only option is to buy back, although indirectly, from the pool of stolen parts, thereby reinforcing the theft cycle.

Funny you should say that TMW. On one of the Reading stations they put a parody commercial for "ChopShopCity Used Auto Parts". It was a riot.

"Just place your order with XXXYYYZZZ (latino name - Reading has a large illegal criminal element) and his mobile dismantling crew will scour the suburban contryside in search of your particular part.... Locations throughout the greater Reading Metro area at most intersections...ChopshopCity"

It only aired for about a day or two and the City managed to get it pulled. Reading also has a large legit latino population that vote. It was true and funny ...but politically incorrect.

I am a lot closer to it than he. It is about 30 miles west of me in central Pa. Garry lives in eastern Pa. Do you need anything from there??

I don't get to see the sprint cars. Mostly stock car and drag racing. My race engine builder/wrench friend build engines for both. A few of his run at both Grandview and Maple Grove. I think he dabbled in them when the Reading Fair Grounds was still there. Money pushed him out of the "Big Show".

Speaking of him (Paul Reinford), he just got inducted into the "East Coast Drag Times" hall of fame.

It's amazing how the same people that likely say "illegal immigration is a federal problem, we can't do anything about it" will somehow manage to get a commercial pulled off of an FCC-licensed radio station even though that is also a "federal problem" that they shouldn't be able to do anything about.

I feel your pain. I remember back in college ready for a run to the liquor store on a friday night walking up to my car. Broken window, and I had to take a second look, the front seats were stolen! It was a Jetta GLI 16V which had recaro seats. The car was nearly totaled due to cost of replacement in VW parts. nearly $4000!

Had the bike theft problem when I lived in Savannah, GA. Basically if you wanted to keep something you had to chain/bolt it down. My neighbor lost his expensive bike, so I learned from his lesson and kept my bike inside my apartment. Now I live in peaceful Chester, VA (Richmond metro area) where nothing happens (yet). Best advice I can give is to install motion detector lighting around where you park if you can. Better yet I hope you catch the numbnuts and give him an a$$whoopin'.

Hey, Gary...

I am a fairly recent central, PA transplant (Pittsburgh native). I may need to contact you for GOOD engine shop recommendations when I am ready for machine work on my Nova 327.
