ASF vs SDF

They changed the blend of materials used for the filter media, and went from a piece of spring steel to a coil spring to retain the media and end caps inside the filter canister. The SDF filters also incorporate a new type of elastomeric ADBV - that change was fairly recent and happened about a year ago.

The design of the internal bypass valve has also changed fairly recently. I think that was a change that Baldwin made on a number of their own filters as well.

Amsoil changed their filter design soon after the Mobil 1 oil filter hit the market in the late 1990's. The old ASF filters were not as good as the M1's, and Amsoil didn't find that acceptable.

TS - just for clarification, the newer ADBV and the upfront coil BV (Ford style) have zero to do with the name change (but of course the ancient ASF didn't have these)
