Hey all,

Have a quick question about Auto-RX in the power steering. I have added about 1 ounce of ARX in my power steering to clean it up. It had the original fluid in it for about 173000 miles.

Current fluid in there is Mobil 1 Synthetic ATF. Since I added ARX, my steering pump is squeaking when I turn the steering wheel to full lock, both left and right.

The power steering belt was changed @ 173850.
The ARX dose was added @ 174355.

My question is could it be the ARX cleaning up the unit or possibly the belt was incorrectly installed?

Right now I have about 650 miles on the ARX + Mobil ATF so 350 miles is left before flushing the fluid.

Did anybody experience something like that with ARX in their P/S units?

Thanks

SB

My Chev pickup ALWAYS squeaks/squeals when turned full-lock either direction- I heard doing that too often isn't good for the pump.

You might have a slightly loose belt. IIRC the belt tension setting on power steering pumps is pretty high, at least so on my '77.

I can't say one way or another if the ARX is cleaning up something that is resulting in the noise problem you describe...

I do know the stuff worked very well for me in my engine.

Too many variables, but the most obvious thing is the belt job.

I'd add more ARX and run it longer. You could try a blotter test just to see the colour compared to fresh ATF. Considering your miles, I'd keep up the process multiple times. Also, M1 ATF is way overkill. Dino ATF will give good results too. Save the synth ATF for way after it's cleaned. I would not use any more until a year and 2 more flushes from now.

The pump may have a bit more pressure now - it may be a bit better. Then a belt may slip at the higher pressures encountered at full lock.
BTW, never hit full lock if you can help it. At the first hint of stopping, back off somewhat.
Hearing PS pumps groan under the massive pressure at full lock in parking lots by well meaning people makes me queasy.

I think that's how my mom popped the power steering pressure hose.

I usually never turn the wheel to full lock. Yes if I hit full lock I would back off a bit. It never did that noise with the old belt.

I've used ARX in my pwr str once with nothing but good results. I agree with the others. Most cars will make some noise when pushed against the full lock position, don't do it. Back off a just a little and it should be quiet.

So is it making the noise before full lock then, if you don't do that?
