Ah ..a sensible "starter shrine". It's something to build upon, I guess. You have to start somewhere

yeah well ,you know how it is.
going to do moms change to rinse this weekend , didn't get to see what her oil looks like this week(too [censored] cold out there). w/temps in the low teen and single digits I don't want to spend any more time out than I have to.
on a side note mom says the truck has been running better. so we'll see how it goes.

changed out from clean to rinse yesterday. the only thing to report is that the oil was not as black as it was w/M1, go figure. popped a new Napa filter on 6.5+ Qts of oil and we're good to do. will check it next week when I'm up there.
have to find out if I can put a bigger/longer filter on it. any suggestions its a 51085.
Gary
going back to your earlier post on the mileage I did a little research and found the typical mods seem to help this engine(intake, exhaust). I also found that a bored out TB will also add a little to the equation but as for hard #'s couldn't find any.

In terms of fuel economy? I doubt it. Maybe if you've got a plugged factory cat (which a cat back won't solve). Fuel economy is an oxymoron in a Wrangler. Not so much in a Cherokee. The money spent on most stuff is better spent on fuel. I may make up the little bit that the lock out hub kit gained if fuel goes high enough in the next year or two. It's been on since 2002.

Some have reported in the low 20's ..but that can be odo/speedo drift. I had a choice, IIRC, of a 31 or 32 tooth speedo gear ..so you take your pick on where you want your accuracy. If you go to the dealer they can dial in the speedo with the DRBII scan tool. The PCM is based, again IIRC, on 8000 pulses per mile.

This chassis desperately needs a small diesel. Something like the turbocharged Peugeot 4 banger like they allegedly have in Europe.

As far as a longer filter, the FL1A, 51515 WIX will fit.

We are on the third of three six-cylinder Cherokees. The last two (the first of which I have reported extensively here) are both 2WD that get above 22 mpg highway. Both were run on REDLINE oil and BALDWIN B2-HPG filters once I got on board (2002) with the use of LC-20, Fuel Power and ARx.

The last of the two 2001 models needed new 02 sensors at 100,000 miles, the previous never skipped a beat prior to being totalled with about 95,000 miles.

We run about 30,000 miles on RL, then do an ARx clean up using Mobil Delvac 1300 10w30 per Franks instructions (actually, somewhat longer miles in clean and rinse phases) along with the same Baldwin filters.

We also change all other fluids (with RL) at the same interval; the exception being the auto trans where we use SCHAEFFERS ATS.

Schaeffers #221 is used for chassis greasing.

well it was back to the mechanic last week for another SES light, multiple miss on #3. had her have the coil rail changed as I believe that has been the source of that problem for almost a yr. runs good now but sometimes has a hot start issue, I'm thinking cats at this point.
oil will be changed out this weekend and second bottle clean phase goes in. I also have to see when she is going to make a long run so I can put another bottle of PI in the gas.

My 02 has been noisey since day 1. It's really bad with Havoline.

So far the quietest oil was green bottle QS. Got Pennz in it now and it's almost as quiet as the QS was.

I don't think that I have a lack of maintenance problem with my Jeep.

Check your head casting #, if its #0331 your head is probably cracked. Very common in 00-01 xj's, and its always the no. 3 or no. 4 cyl. where it gets the hottest. Get a uoa to check for coolant. If your head is cracked coolants probably leaking into oil via cyl.

I was under the impression that this was just a casting flaw and not a structural issue (as in "cracking due to overheat") I think the remedy was applying an epoxy sealer to the effected area ..not trashcan the head for a new one. It develops on the top side of the head ..or so I believe.

well after getting under the Jeep yesterday I noticed 2 things....
both pinion seals are weeping and it looks like its time for motor mounts. the exhaust manifold is way too close to the oil pan.
oil came out really black for lack of a better term and the filter was heavier than I expected. after pouring the used oil out of the pan there was quite a bit of c r a p in the bottom. put in fresh oil and the second dose of ARx and we'll see how fast it darkens up.

I almost missed it too, Sprintman. I had to go back and check.

Put on some rustys offroad poly mounts instead of the stockers. Did you check the head casting #?

And yes there are bigger filters, ill have to check the part# on mine to double check.

Gary already posted the filter#
no I haven't checked the head, but it hasn't lost any coolant at all that I've noticed. I check it a least once a week since I started this cleaning process.

just an up date
now in the final rinse cycle and all is well at this time. when I drained the second clean oil it wasn't as "gritty" as the last rinse phase. after this rinse I'm going to do one more short OCI on dino then let Mom go back to her M1 like before. that will keep her and the mechanic happy. he doesn't particularly like me, hes a little too old school for me.
going to use the SSO in the G/F Yota and see what shakes out.

He doesn't like you for one of two reasons. Either he thinks you're a smackedarse kook who does stupid stuff (if it was sensible, he feels he would already know about it).

..or that you know something that he doesn't and it threatens his ego.

last up date ........
jeep is running great. pressure is up where it use to be now. gave it a small dose of PI just to clean things out on the other side. it seems to like it, a lot more peppy for a 3oz shot.
Mom is going back to her M1 at her mechanic for now. I'll do a UOA right before her next change just to see how its going.
